i was walking through a field of sand when i beheld a sight most peculiar
a man no larger than my fingernail was drunkenly stumbling along! i soon understood it was not an excess of liquor ailing him but an absence of water
i do not believe myself to be cruel or to find amusement in man's suffering (even such a minuscule man) so i lifted my flask above him and out fell what must've seemed to be a torrential downpour soaking into his clothes and hair and pores and rinsing the dust of the desert away
i imagined him taking in gulps and gulps and being revitalized enough to complete his journey wherever it may be leading him
so i'm sure you can understand my surprise when it was absorbed by the sand without even a single drop reaching him...
you see it wasn't a man no larger than my fingernail drunkenly stumbling along but a man at such a distance i could hardly comprehend his form drunkenly stumbling along!
i laughed and laughed at my error and mourned and mourned his dehydration
i pray that if some observer from distance unknowable is watching me that they make the same mistake i have i pray that they show me a kindness futile and unbeknownst to me i pray they laugh and laugh and mourn and mourn i pray that as it is afar so is it up-close
