at the crossroads of choice
we have been here before, and we’ll be here again. that’s the moral of the story, that’s what we’ll remember on our way out. the only thing more memorable than the crossroads is the making of the choice. that’ll stick with you. you take the left path and dream of the right; you take the right path and you wish you’d taken the left. this is how it goes, because this is how it has always gone. to be human is to be all made up of what-ifs and might-have-beens and suchlike. you know. i will wake up in my own sort of prison—it’s a fairytale—and i will find myself standing before a nightmare and a dream both. and so i will curse the narrator or i will curse my own pen, my own hand. i will choose or i will turn back: these are crossroads too, these are truths. i will say this out loud, or i will remain silent, as is my right. i will be brief, or i will muse on the decision for hours. hours, i could be here. and so it is time to choose; and so it is time not to choose yet, or it is time to choose choice. and so i’m back at the crossroads again.
