General Notes: Rachel auditions for the school musical, Hocus Pocus
Rachel was nervous. She had never done a musical before and she didn’t know if she would be what the judges were looking for to play the role of Sarah. She wasn’t as pretty as Kitty and knowing that the blonde was going up against her for the same role was nerve wracking. Rachel knew in her heart of hearts that she was a better performer than Kitty but she also knew that she wasn’t a pretty. She didn’t have the classic beauty that she felt the judges would want for Sarah and that intimated Rachel.
Being snapped from her thoughts when Mr. Schue who was directing the musical called out her name, Rachel made her way to the stage and stood facing the judges and the otherwise empty audience as she stood center stage.
“Hello, my name is Rachel Berry and I’ll be audition for the role of Sarah. I will be singing a classic for you all today, People from one of my favorite musicals Funny Girl.” Rachel explained before smiling nervously at the three teachers.
Closing her eyes as the music began to swell from behind her, Rachel shut out everything else and focused on the song knowing this was a chance to prove to Kitty and the rest of the William McKinley High School that she was just as good as they are… maybe even better.
We travel single-oh
Maybe we're lucky, but I don't know--
With them,
Just let one kid fall down
and seven mothers faint.
I guess we're both happy, but maybe--
We ain't.
People… people who need people
are the luckiest people in the world,
we’re children, needing other children
And yet letting our grown-up pride
Hide all the need inside,
Acting more like children
than children.
Lovers are very special people,
they’re the luckiest people
in the world.
With one person, one very special person
a feeling deep in your soul
Says you were half,
now you're whole.
No more hunger and thirst
but first be a person
who needs people.
People who need people
are the luckiest people
in the world!
After holding the last note perfectly, Rachel smiled brightly when she saw Mr. Schue smiling and holding his hand over his heart. Taking a quick bow, Rachel exited the stage with a new surge of confidence. Her voice was special, beautiful and unique… she had to start believing in herself more often.
