Self Directed Manifesto Final: Wisdom Woven in Stone
Materials: Wood, yarn, string, pebbles, and a blue glass marble
Dimensions: 24 x 2 x 20
Wisdom Woven in Stone is a mixed-media wall sculpture I created to explore the connection between nature, vision, and inner wisdom. I built this sculpture within a triangular wooden frame because it is often associated with balance, strength, and spiritual understanding. At the center of the piece is an eye that I woven using colorful yarn and string. This eye represents not only physical sight but also a deeper approach in our ability to see truth and meaning in the world around us. In place of the cornea, I used a blue glass marble to draw attention to the center of the eye. Its smooth surface and bright color represent directness and focus, like a clear moment of understanding. Surrounding the lower areas of the triangle are filled with small river pebbles. These stones symbolize time, patience, and grounding. Just as stones are shaped by nature over many years, our wisdom is shaped by the experiences we collect over time. The contrast between the soft texture of the yarn and the hardness of the pebbles shows how wisdom is both gentle and strong, formed through both emotion and courage. Through this work I would like to invite viewers to reflect on where their own wisdom comes from, and how even simple, everyday materials like yarn, wood, and stone can carry deep meaning when brought together with purpose.
