Review: Selfie is the kind of show that was doomed to fail. It had a gimmick title that it quickly got away from. It had real characters that meant it would have to get through a few rough episodes before it found it's groove. It was also a bit weird in the vein of arrested development or scrubs so it was never gonna get the hugest audience. Sadly all this meant it was one of the first shows to get cancelled.
Too bad because the show did find it's groove and got better each week. This is mostly thanks to the performances of Karen Gillan and John Cho. Their chemistry was great and they managed to ground this two wackos. Karen Gillan especially was very charming. She took a character that could have been super annoying and unbearable and manged to bring a heart to her that pretty much saved the show. Again giving her a nerdy past could have been just another thing to cater to but she ran with it and made it feel real.
The show just worked and wasn't cookie cutter. Which is sadly probably why it's not here anymore.
Worse Episode: Pilot The pilot relied the most on the gimmick and it suffers the most because of it. If it was meant to grab the audience, it alienated them and was dismissable as a "dumb" show.
Favorite Episode: A little Yelp from my friends I feel this is where the show got it together. Not only is Eliza's social life part of the story but it also has the most jokes and characters are starting to shine. It was also the best connection between Henry, Jon Cho's character. The best thing about the show is showing how these two people who were "opposites" could relate so well. Maybe that's how love works. It's not the things on the outside, the things we like, it's something deeper. Something real. Love.
That's what the show was going for and I'm sad it's gone.
Trivia: We'll miss you Selfie!
