Diana couldn't hide her grin when her eyes met Akali's, greeting her with the usual, "Hey there, Killer." This time, she had something in her hands. The veteran mercenary held a small, wrapped, rectangular gift out to the assassin, levying a swift wink at her. "Merry Christmas, figured you'd appreciate a gift." Inside was a crystalline, heart shaped pendant with the words 'Live Free' carved into it. It seemed she had gone through quite the bit of trouble procuring this present.
It has been three years since Akali took the time to celebrate Snowdown, much less to give or receive a gift. Three years since she reveled in the holiday spirit with her family. Three years since she went rogue. But here was Diana, a bartender she just met in the middle of the night one time, handing her a gift as if it was the most normal thing to do.
The assassin carefully took the wrapped gift from the veteran, as if it might shatter to pieces just from her touching it. Everything she touched was either a weapon used to destroy, or something to be destroyed. If her assumptions were correct, the present was neither of those. Akali fidgeted ever so slightly under the other woman's gaze as she unwrapped the gift. When she finally saw what was inside, her breath caught in her throat.
Live Free, the pendant said. Two simple words. And yet, those two words felt like it was what her whole being was aching for. To live free. Free from this shit hole of a world. Free from the bullshit she had to endure, and is still enduring. She may not have the head of the person who murdered her parents now, but maybe, just maybe, spending time with someone this Snowdown was enough. Enough for her heart to feel free, even just for a moment.
Akali felt pressure building up behind her eyes, and she quickly turned her back to the bartender. Oh hell no, she wasn't going to cry in front of Diana of all people. She clenched her fist and took a deep breath, letting the chilly air of the season fill her senses.
"You know I'm not one for jewelry right?" she said with a half-hearted smirk as she glanced back, but it came out weaker than intended. Fuck.
Akali hissed under her breath and turned to face Diana again. Instead of simply thanking her for the meaningful gift, she engulfed her in an embrace. She was warm. Warm and sturdy. Akali felt like melting and staying there for an eternity. A few seconds passed before the assassin reached up to squeeze the taller woman's shoulder.
"Tell anyone about this, and I'm kicking your ass."
