From Medina to Palmeraie – The five best hotels in Marrakech
Marrakech is always high on our editors’ must-see lists; the city’s rich exoticism paired with a slew of world-class hotels make it impossible for well-heeled travelers to ignore. There are properties for every type of visitor—from the high-energy to the low-key, the restaurant-obsessed to the breakfast-in-bed type. Here, five of our favorites.
LA SULTANA
Right in the heart of Marrakech’s bustling medina, a stay at La Sultana ensures that you’ll be in the midst of all the action. A veritable fusion of cultures, the five riads that comprise the hotel range from an intricate zellige-tiled tribute to Old Fez to a warm terracotta structure recalling South America to a Senegalese-style lair recalling the African savannah. In short—there’s truly something for everyone, especially the hands-on adventurer.
ROYAL MANSOUR
We call this the ultimate splurge. Owned by King Mohammed VI, Royal Mansour is a palace—literally—built for a king. Hidden behind adobe walls, imposing bronze gates, and a centarian olive and pomegranate tree-dotted courtyard, is the gilded, tiled, silken Moorish compound. Choose from one of 53 three-story riads built around a central atrium, and relax on the third floor rooftop with your own private plunge pool, solarium, and roaring fireplace.
THE FOUR SEASONS MARRAKECH
With its location slightly west of the city, The Four Seasons Marrakech is a great pick for families who crave a quieter hamlet from the busy city center. And the Atlas Mountain views aren’t too shabby, either. Seamlessly merging Moorish-inspired styling with modern amenities, the 40-acre property offers a “Kids for All Seasons” program (a comprehensive kid’s club for 4 to 12 year olds) and a hip young adult center (with ping pong, foosball, and the all-important Xbox).
KSAR CHAR BAGH
This sand-colored structure rising from the Moroccan earth feels more like a private palace than a true hotel, and that’s why we think it’s Marrakech’s most romantic. Ksar Char Bagh is the epicenter of pampering and indulgence—located in the lush Palmeraie (palm groves) beyond the walls of the Medina. Meander through the herb gardens, hand in hand, before retiring to your harim with its cozy open fire and sunken tub. Languish in the vaulted marble hammam, or share inventive fare from the in-house French chef who surprises guests with daily dishes at his whim.
HOTEL SELMAN MARRAKECH
The newest hotel on the proverbial block, Hotel Selman Marrakech opened in May, 2012 to much fanfare—and deservingly so. Set on a six-acre Andalousian park, this Jacques Garcia-designed Arabian-Moorish palace (think redbrick exteriors and Napoleon-era furnishings) is a true feast for the eyes. There are three restaurants, three outdoor pools, two heated indoor pools, and 56 guest rooms in the sprawling complex, but the pièce de résistance is undoubtedly the on-site stable filled with gorgeous Arabian horses.
