Art Weekend - Childhood Memories by Selva Aparicio
While a rug or carpet traditionally covers a floor and can be moved easily, Selva Aparicio carves one directly into a hardwood floor in her Child Memories installation. The piece is meant to symbolize childhood trauma as well as uncovering and bearing witness to it. Aparicio states that “My memories are permanently etched, so the soft fabric is represented in hand-carved scars on discarded wood flooring,”

Hand carved rug onto oak floor
“Rugs are typically adorned with sacred gardens and oases, and can be moved around the home. This rug stayed put, quietly participating in years of familial abuse. This installation is about covering and exposing, trauma, and bearing witness.
My memories are permanently etched, so the soft fabric is represented in hand-carved scars on discarded wood flooring, I strive to find beauty in the peril and bear witness to the progression of ephemerality-permanence-loss.”
