The Self-Proclaimed God (2013)
The character sketch and the finished picture! This one features my character Semal.
When asked what kind of a divine/supernatural being he is, he introduces himself as a “sky god”. It doesn’t translate well to English, but in Finnish, the word for sky is “taivas”, which stands for both “sky” and “heaven”, so his “profession” can be understood in two ways: as an over-looker of the skies, or as the ruler of the the Taivas, realm of gods.

Simli tree (after which Simlipal national park is named) is also known as semal and red silk cotton tree. Its alternative names are the Malabar silk-cotton tree and the red cotton tree. The young simli tree has a spiny bark that keeps animals at bay and protects the trunk and branches. These conical spines erode as the tree grows and the bark hardens.

Cassia fistula – the Chandelier of the Gods One of the trees that blossoms with beautiful flowers during this time, this season of Vasant, in the month of Vaishakh, is the Cassia fistula, commonly known as the Golden Shower, and aptly rechristened by Vaishali, my wife, as the ‘Chandelier of the Gods’. True that. It indeed is the chandelier of the Gods. When it blossoms in Vasant, Spring if you…
