Misadventures of Fall Semester
*This happened near the end of August.
The week of the semester has been really shitastic for me. I feel so dumb and out of place. So here’s what happened:
MANIC MONDAY
At 2:55, I left work and went to KHB2005 for Liu’s Readings in Critical Theory class and went straight into the room, not realizing that there was a class still in session. [Oops #1] I’ve decided to number my fuck ups to see how many mistakes I’ve made in such a short period of time. Okay, back to the story. I’m looking around and notice that the other students look really young. It prompted me to ask, “What class are you waiting for?” The girl next to me says, “Political Science 1500.” Right when those words left her mouth, I realized that I was definitely in the wrong class. [Oops #2] I realized that I only had 5 minutes left to get to the correct building and the correct class. At that moment of panic, I had no freaking idea where this new location was at and felt a bit disoriented. Thankfully I got to class on time, panting after climbing up three flights of stairs. Anyway, I was expecting an Asian professor but was surprised when I saw Knighton, who is nothing close to being Asian. [Oops #3] My simpleton mind thought, “What the heck is he doing here?” and couldn’t grasp or turn that thought around into the idea that I’m actually having the class that I thought I have tomorrow, right now. [Oops #4] 4 mistakes in one day, wow. I am on a roll.
TERRIBLE TUESDAY
I was walking up from the Luckman Parking lot to go grab breakfast, which is about a half mile walk. Once I got to the café to buy some coffee, a girl tapped me on the shoulder and whispered sheepishly, “Excuse me. Your dress got caught on something and your underwear is showing.” [Oops #5] Hoping to recover from that whole embarrassing situation, I was shown no mercy. I went into my boss’s office and she asked me what time we are closing on Friday. I said, “3 pm” and she gave me a confused look since she thought it was 12 pm. I explained to her, thinking that I was right, that we closed at 3pm because it’s week 2. [Oops #6] It was only the first week. I don’t know what is wrong with me.
WACKY WEDNESDAY
I went to the right class today, but didn’t have a great class. I was kind of falling asleep when Knighton was lecturing, but I did take notes. Of course, my coffee started to kick in towards the end of the class even though I drank it at the beginning of class. At the end of the class, we had a writing exercise, which I totally bombed because what I had was so shitty. I had all the information in my head, but had trouble articulating it. When I was turning in my notecard, I saw how much more everyone wrote and mine was only half of it. I told myself that it’s quality over quantity, but I know what my classmates wrote had substance to it, unlike my vacuous writing.
The time to actually write the quiz went by so fast! 10 minutes felt like 3 minutes. I wrote “so sorry this is so bad” on my notecard. [Oops #7] Now to think of it, I don’t think that was such a great idea. I was so ashamed of what I had to turn in because that’s not the type of writing I usually do. Oh, and another thing, I had the wrong type of flashcard. He wanted 4 x 6 ones, but I just assumed that the regular ones where 4 x 6. I even specifically went to Target to get the flashcards. I’m such an idiot.
THANKFUL THURSDAY
Ahhh, the first week of semester was finally coming to an end. From what I remember, it was a good day. I really needed to catch a break because I was just feeling so beat from the previous three days. It’s an exciting experience to be in a semester system, but at the same time, I can see the drawbacks of it. All I can say is that I am going to try my best to keep up with my readings and hope that I will become who I once was as a student.
