sam had heard through the chit chatter of the woman hanging about down stairs that someone had finally taken the apartment next door to his. vacant after all these years and now will suddenly house a human. one that won’t let the simple beauty of the cheap apartment turn to dust, spiderwebs, and rot.
their neighbour across the hallway had once explained to sam in a nightly chat when the young man had run out of sugar. that the man who used to sleep within those walls, had up’d and disappeared one night, leaving all his clothes and personal belongings behind. no one had heard or seen him again. some told fables of how he died and the tennant of the building cleared his body away before anyone could see. others whispered of lies, constructing a fib based around the rattling of old hinges and groaning of old age timber walls, that he never left. living within the walls. forever haunted by his spirit. the less inclined to gossip just shrugged their shoulders and simply stated that the man moved on to greater things. now after all these years, the whisper of the room were renewed but with words of a beautiful young woman now occupying the space all by herself.
sam had baked a fresh batch of cookies the night before last. for his brother who never turned up. normally he would have sat on his single couch and ate them to the last crumb. he opted for a new solution. wrapping them up on a plastic plate & heading out to the door beside his. with a curled fist, sam knocked three times on the door.
