It’s a lie, of course. He’s always been shit at healing spells. It’s more Lupin’s talent–                            softer, nobler– Sirius is the fighter, and he likes it that way. But that won’t help him here. A panicked search with his eyes finds no Remus on the battlefield, no one qualified to take this responsibility– and the consequences that come with failure– from him. He mutters what charms he can remember under his breath, and it occurs to him that his hands should be trembling. It’s cold, after all. Maybe it’s his friend’s blood that’s keeping them warm. Funny, he thinks. How bright and red it all looks in the snow. Like a painting. God. Why is she still bleeding?        ❛ We have to move, Lils. Hold on to me, all right? ❜ He’s not bad at apparition, but doing it for two is always a gamble. He gives her hand a squeeze and closes his eyes. Now or never.

       ❛ Liar ❜  She can’t be quite sure if he hears her, because she can’t be sure if she actually spoke. perhaps she merely moved her lips, thought the sentence from the back of her mind, a mind that was rapidly trying to process what was happening and how to fix it. 

how did she fix it? it was odd, really -- she had always been good at healing spells, had made sure she had an abundance of them in her repertoire. ironic, that she was unable to heal herself. she could barely hold her hand over her wound. or maybe, sirius was the one doing that. 

She barely understands what he’s saying, green eyes lulling closed. She feels like a toddler fighting sleep -- forcing her eyes open at the last second. She had to stay awake, had to FOCUS.

she let out a strangled cry as he moves to shoulder her weight, arm slung over his neck as she holds onto her side. she wasn’t in the proper state to apparate herself, but side-along apparition --- if she got splinched -- well, that might be it for her. 

then again, if they stayed, she would bleed out.  the perfect catch-22.

Remus is pretty sure no one’s ever actually said that, but map making - especially this sort of map - involved a lot of trial and error. Mostly error, and a lot of scrapped parchment. The more they explored the castle, the more nooks and crannies they found, and the more their map needed to be revised. Hogwarts as a location was unplottable, but Remus was starting to wonder if the inside of the castle would be just as impossible to map out…

“Maybe I can help? What is it that you’re trying to do?”

It seems like such a barbaric idea, at first. Throwing around jinxes was one thing, but throwing punches? Remus had spent most of his life worried that he might accidentally hurt someone; the thought of doing it on purpose doesn’t sit right with him, it feels so unnatural that his stomach turns at the thought.

But... times were changing. In a pinch, knowing how to deck a Death Eater might end up saving his life.

“I know I’m not supposed to have my thumb tucked in-” Remus holds up his hand, balled into a fist, thumb out. “But that’s about the extent of my knowledge.”

“No!” Wand sent a blast over her shoulder and Marlene didn’t wait to see if it landed or not. Didn’t focus on anything other than getting him out of here and somewhere a little more dignified than some back alley way. She slid into him, arms wrapping around his shoulders and with a small mutter they were whisked away to a wooded clearing. Somewhere her and James had grown up playing, somewhere safe. She’d seen the hit. Seen the way it caused him to buckle and the trickle of blood at the corner of his mouth. It wouldn’t be the first time someone she knew had been taken out in such a way, wouldn’t be the last, but this was the first time she’d been there.

And this was Sirius.

One of her dearest friends. The lad who had turned into a great man over the years and someone she had been proud to fight with in this war. They were all far too young to be dealing with such hardships; forced to grow up so fast. It was too much to ask of anyone and yet they all stood and fought bravely for what they had believed in. Tragic, in all honesty. There would be no winners in this war, only bloodshed until one side had enough.

Tears crept down her cheeks. Sirius’ head in her lap and she did her best to keep calm. To keep her fingers from shaking as they drifted through a mess of loose hair. “M’so sorry, so very, very, sorry,” she whispered, bending down to press lips to his forehead. If only she’d of caught sight of him seconds earlier, if only she had been closer. Perhaps she could have pushed him out of the way. Taken some of the blow so they could both live to fight another day instead of a teary eyed goodbye.

She glanced up, sky clear and stars shining as if they were welcoming him home. He belonged up there- watching over the rest of them. Guiding them to greatness. It was cruel that he was to die on such a beautiful night, cruel and fitting all at the same time and Marlene hated it. “Listen ta me, aye? Ya listen good, I’ve never known anyone as brave as ye are. An’ I love ya fer it. We all do.” A sad smile and thumbs ran over his cheeks, “So if yer fakin’ now would be a good time ta tell me ta stop blubberin’ so I can hit ye and we can get tha fuck out of here.”

Welts are obvious on skin as pale as his, and Christmas holiday ended recently enough that he should have known better than to wear anything revealing. …The playboy bunny posters had been worth it, though.

She’s not an idiot, not by a long shot, and she knows what it’s like to hide bruises and bloody knuckles, to hide scars that magic could not vanish. She knows because she had them too, because she fights and she eggs people on, and she taunts them until the only thing left to do is feel their fist against her jaw.

But she’s a good kid, a sweet girl, and she would never ever do anything like that. Never mind the fiasco that was fourth year ((as if she had really fallen down a cliffside)), never mind her parents had just been murdered --- she was polite, and innocent and rule abiding Lily Evans. 

She didn’t even realize she’d been following Sirius, until she stopped him, hand catching his shoulder, pulling him to a stop. She handed him a small glass jar.

“It’s could for all types of wounds, yeah? Heals them right up.” She didn’t say anything else, just continued walking. If he didn’t want to talk about it, fine.
