Help. I need some words of advice. I am a heterosexual girl and my best friend is a gay man. We do everything together. I love him for who he is. He has a longtime boyfriend who is also a very nice guy. I love them together. But there is a problem. I have had feelings for my best friend for a very long time. I have tried to bity them somewhere far away and that worked for a very long time. Every now and then they resurface, cause my a heart a bit to break and to push my feelings away again. So that’s what’s been going on for several years. A few days ago my mate and I were getting drunk and he took my face in his hands. Suddenly dead serious, he told me that things could have been different if he had been straight and that we could have been ‘together’. I laughed and brushed it off due to our drunken state (and me being perplexed). He looked sad at my well faked smile. I broke down afterwards. Because it’s just not possible and I hate ‘what if’s’ that can never be real. I want him as my friend and him with his boyfriend. So the morning after was interesting because we didn’t mention his confession and pretended it did not happen. But unfortunately we’re shit actors and it took only one brief exchange of looks between us to say that we both remembered. So I tried to act as if nothing happened (because nothing will) but he has been a little diffrent. Please I need someone to tell me what to do. (Also: please, I’m not the heterosexual woman who wants to break relationships or convert a gay guy. I really am not that girl)

Wow... okay... so.... the best thing you can do in this situation is take some time away from your best friend. not avoid him or ignore him, but put distance in between him and yourself. we can’t really help who we fall for but we can help what happens afterward. you might feel the need to confess these feeling to him which may be awkward or unnecessary but if you feel you can not see him without telling him, go for it, just know it will most likely not change the outcome of anything
