Day 9 | #septemberfantasychallenge | Fantasy Animal Companions vs Author Pets The first two images are Pinterest art I found for a concept combing an owl and house cat which was the inspiration I had in mind when I created Caeruleus, Shea’s Azulean Lionbird familiar. I loved finding these drawings and then building upon them, for instance I wanted Caeruleus to have a lot of the owl characteristics but the coloring more of a peacock with the greens and blue. Following behind are my babies, Zeppelin, Ziggy, and Tali. Day 7 | #septemberfantasychallenge | Favorite Fantasy Themes My number one fantasy theme would have to be high fantasy, or the epic journey. A world other than ours. It may have a nominal connection with present day Earth, such as being our remote past or future, but this plays no role in the plot. High Fantasy usually focuses on the epic struggle between absolute good and absolute evil, and the characters are thrust in the midst. Low Fantasy portrays the struggle of characters to achieve their own personal goals, ranging from questionable to decidedly unsavory. Day 6 | #septemberfantasychallenge | Fantasy Recommendation This is one of my favorite series. The Fallen is such a great series, and one of the only YA series I can still read as an adult without cringing. It’s a great fantasy series, that delves into the world of Angels and Nephilims and a struggle between the mortal and the divine. Thomas E. Sniegoski is a fantastic author and wrote a fantastically magical series while still creating relatable characters for young adults to identify with. It’s a Supernatural Fantasy but not a romance. Aaron, the main character, is definitely my favorite. I’ll be honest if you’re a fan of the Lauren Kate Fallen series, this series probably isn’t for you. Unlike Kate’s Fallen, this book has a lot of great gritty action, cool fight sequences and incredibly vivid storytelling with a strong protagonist. Day 5 | #septemberfantasychallenge | Intro to Fantasy So I thought this prompt was a little weird. “Convince someone to try Fantasy?” And I was like how do I show that, how do I know if I do? And I thought back to all the times I’ve talked to people about the fantasy genre and often my gateway is: do you like mythology? Greek, Egyptian, Norse, any kind of mythology? And really often people will say yes. Fantasy often builds on those kind of stories that we grow up with or even use the types of structures we recognize when world building a fantastical setting, characters, monsters, or magic. I mean Poseidon was my favorite Greek god as a kid and his stories inspired me to create my own ideas of a world that considered him King, not Zeus and the type of ocean culture that would create. The idea that anything is possible isn’t overwhelming to me it’s inspirational and it’s why I enjoy the genre so much. So if you’re unsure about stepping into fantasy fiction, try a book of mythology and if you enjoy that branch out into other kinds such as the supernatural or middle earth. Day 3 | #septemberfantasychallenge | Favorite Fantasy Quote Peter Pan is one of my favorite stories. There’s so many quotes I could choose from the story but this one has always stayed with me. The moment you stop believing that something is possible for you achieve the harder it becomes to achieve it. This quote really got me through writing my first book. Most of writing for me is believing in what I do. Believing in magic and possibilities because if I didn’t I couldn’t possibly write fantasy. The little voice in your head can go a long way in stopping you from going after what you want. Don’t let it.
