I think... Gemma’s more physical, with Serena being more verbal with her affection.

Two young women move into rivaling towns. Gemma, having a passion for animals since she was small, goes to Bluebell. Serena, recently graduated with honors from a college for horticulture, goes to Konohana.

They meet at a cooking competition and fall fast, but soon find there's more bad blood between their towns than just trash talking. They hatch a plan to use cooking to bring the towns - and themselves - together.

Seremma, 2. “Notice anything different about me?”

“Notice anything different about me?”  Gemma twirled, hands spread wide. 

“Well,” Serena said, “your hair is parted just to the right of where it would usually be.” 

Gemma’s hand went to her hairline in surprise.  It was normally hidden by her bandana.  How did she notice that? 

Serena hummed, staring at Gemma with a faraway look, holding up a finger.  “You stained below the eyes but you usually don’t.  Oh dear, did you stay up late again?” 

How did she notice that?! 

“I meant… my dress.”  Gemma gestured down.  It had taken her a late night to lay the finishing touches, sure.  And the fact that it happened to be Serena’s favorite color was just a coincidence, that’s all!  “It ‘as pockets!” 

“Oh!”  Serena’s eyes lit with delight.  That’s the most beautiful thing I’ve seen all day- shut up Gemma!  “How wonderful!” 

“Ya think so?”  Why am I so desperate for her approval? 

“Oh, yes!  The colors are so lovely.  And the fit, it’s quite very… fit!” 

You know, I’m pretty sure bright red is my natural face color.  Nothing to see here!

anyway! seremma time. cue mood music.

Rini doesn’t remember. She doesn’t remember Martina, she doesn’t remember Dunstan, she doesn’t remember Jasper, she doesn’t remember Norberto. She doesn’t remember the world they live in or the town she’s from, and honestly, she still doesn’t think that “Rini” is the name she’s supposed to go by.

But somehow, despite everything, she remembers Gemma.

“Remember” is a strong word for what she feels. She doesn’t remember who Gemma is, or how they met, or what they are to each other--but she knows Gemma deeper than that, beyond body, by her soul. She knows that Gemma is important to her, though to what end, she could not say. 

But she knows.

She knows the sound of Gemma’s footsteps on wooden floorboards. She knows the taste of her cooking, the familiarity of her words, the warmth of her hands holding Rini’s own. She knows Gemma so much deeper than her empty mind can comprehend, and it should scare her, and it does, but more than that Gemma is a beacon of belonging that she cannot turn away from.

Gemma wants her there. She can’t rightly turn that down, with or without her wits about her.

Rini follows that beacon where ever it leads her, and Gemma’s hand guiding her own pulls her to the deck of the Maritime Mare, as rain still falls in the dead of night. It’s a cold, ocean rain, but it falls softly around them, and Gemma looks to her with a hopeful look.

“Sometimes, when I was feeling blue, Dad would take me outside and run around with me. Rain or... well, moonshine, I guess.” She explains with a laugh. “It was always my favorite when it rained. I liked to think the Spirit of the Land was washing away everything that made me sad, and I always felt better in the end.”

Her hand still in Rini’s, she gestures out to the deck with a nod of her head.

“Would you like to try? It might cheer you up.”

Truth be told, Rini isn’t sure if it would help. But she knows in her heart she would follow Gemma anywhere, so she nods, and lets Gemma lead her into the rain.

Rain doesn’t scare her. Storms don’t scare her, to be more precise, because she can look at the mark on Gemma’s skin and know that thunder and lightning mean her no harm, even if they were present in this moment. They aren’t, though; all that is here now is her and Gemma, in the middle of the night in their evening gowns, miles away from land and with only the other as their company, and Rini has not felt this safe in what feels like a lifetime.

It’s all so natural, the way they move about each other. Running around, laughing, playing tag, dancing and twirling hand in hand. Rini has to wonder if they’ve done this before, perhaps--but no, no, she wouldn’t have forgotten something like this. She wouldn’t have forgotten this feeling, water splashing beneath her bare feet, fingers and toes pruning and her not caring, free in every sense of the word.

But maybe, she thinks, seeing the warmth of Gemma’s smile... maybe it was something she yearned for instead.

Gemma spins her around to and fro, and Rini lets it happen, because all roads lead back to Gemma and it’s the only thing keeping her grounded right now. Ironically so, because Rini stumbles over a puddle, and Gemma catches and sets her back on her feet. She’s still giggling as she does, hair dripping wet and sticking to her face.

“Sorry about that. Too fast, eh?”

Gemma fills her eyes and her mind and her heart, regardless of whether or not she realizes it, and Rini thinks it might all just burst from her chest before she ever remembers who she is or was. Because she has to wonder--does Gemma want that person back even more than Rini does? 

It’s sad to think about. But it wasn’t like she can rightly blame her. But if Gemma is waiting for the person Rini was, then the Rini now had to say something, before--and if--she was lost for good.

She breathes a shuddering breath, and takes both of Gemma’s hands in her own. Gemma looks to their joined hands, and blinks. “Rini?”

“I--” The words die in her throat, but Rini forces herself to speak. “I... think I love you.”

Gemma gasps under her breath, and her hands clench around Rini’s fingers.

“You... you think?” She almost sounds sad.

“It makes... the most sense.” Rini admits; her own voice is shaking with shame, but she has to speak no matter what. “I feel--I know that I’m safe with you. I know that you’re important to me. But I don’t know if it’s because it’s you, or if it’s someone or something I forgot, and I can’t...” 

She swallows. “I have this bad feeling--something’s waiting for me in Lumitalowe, and I know we have to go there. But... if my memories come back, I don’t want to have said something wrong right now. I don’t want to hurt you.”

Though looking at Gemma now, her face equal part hope and heartache, Rini can’t help but feel she already has.

“I know I can’t ask this of you, but... do you think you could wait for me?” She pleads. “The real me--I’ll give you a real answer, then.”

Gemma is silent for what feels like a lifetime, but the smile she gives ignites a memory of pure light. Adrenaline of them running, fighting, taking leap after leap of faith side by side fills Rini’s veins, and Gemma raises their linked hands, intertwining their fingers together.

“You’re the real you right now.” She says, softly, and Rini can’t tell if its tears or the rain falling down her cheeks. “But I’ll wait for you, Rini. As long as you need me.”

Silence passes again, and then all of a sudden, Rini can also no longer tell the difference between her tears or the sky’s.

I read “two-piece” and my brain IMMEDIATELY went to bikini and then I didn’t put the word ANYWHERE IN THIS but it’s fine, it’s fine

“I...must admit, I’ve never worn something quite like this before.” Serena shuffles nervously inside her hotel room; the rest of her friends have been ready to go for at least a few minutes, but Serena’s nerves have kept her from joining them. And perhaps it’s a bit silly, she knows no one will judge her, but...Arboria wasn’t exactly known for apparel like this. (“Like this,” of course, being the two-piece swimsuit that Gemma had insisted would look absolutely wonderful on her.)

“Aw, ‘Rena, let me see!” Gemma replies, about five seconds from unhinging the door itself based on how she’s clearly trying to wrestle it open. “I jus’ know you look stunnin’!”

Serena sighs, trying to build her confidence before she panics. “Well, alright then,” she murmurs as she opens the door.

The moment Gemma registers that there’s no longer a door in her way, she freezes in place, jaw practically hitting the floor.

“Oh, goodness, I must look silly in this,” Serena mutters, because there’s certainly no other reason for Gemma to look at her like that, right? “I’ll—”

Gemma catches her hand. “No!” she yells, clapping her hand over her mouth when she realizes just how loud she is. (A bit too late, since Mia’s delighted cackle can be heard from the hotel’s entrance.) “No,” she repeats, softer, “you...y’look beautiful.”

Serena’s read every romance novel she could get her hands on, had dreamed of living one for herself, and yet, now that she seems to have found herself in one, she’s speechless, unable to stop her face from burning red. And when she finally regains the ability to function...

Well, perhaps Gemma should be the one to initiate in this scenario, but Serena’s been growing braver lately, and surely there’s no better way to prove it than to kiss the very cute, very flustered girl in front of her.

Who said “I love you” first: Sera, obviously. Emma, trying to say I love you: “I,,,,, I,,,,, would be upset if you died”

Who would have the other’s picture as their phone background: Definitely Emma, who would also definitely hide their phone and protest at length if someone noticed. 

Who leaves notes written in fog on the bathroom mirror: Probably Sera, she seems the type. And Emma seems the type to insist she use the shower first, since Emma doesn’t mind cold showers. 

Who buys the other cheesy gifts: Emma, definitely. She’s the type to show her affection through random dumb but actually kind of thoughtful gifts. Maker forbid she show it any other way. 

Who initiated the first kiss: As I recall, it was Sera, both times! 

Who kisses the other awake in the morning: Actually probably Emma, because I get the feeling Sera sleeps in, whereas Emma barely sleeps at all. 

Who starts tickle fights: Sera. Definitely. 

Who asks who if they can join the other in the shower: Sera again, winning all the awards for being the forward one in the relationship. 

Who surprises the other in the middle of the day at work with lunch: Sera, Emma forgets to eat with such regularity that I’d be impressed if she remembered other people need food

Who was nervous and shy on the first date: They took turns. 

Who kills/takes out the spiders: Both of them, and both of them murder the spiders, although Emma is the one who insists it’s fine if they’re outside and won’t let Sera kill them out there, haha. 

Who loudly proclaims their love when they’re drunk: Sera, probably, mostly because Emma is busy loudly proclaiming other things
