two hands longing for each other's warmth
Podcast: The Bright Sessions
Rating: T+
Pairings: Sam Barnes/Mark Bryant (with a canon-typical amicable breakup at the end)
“I apologize for the circumstances that brought you here,” says Agent Green after he sits down. “Normally, we want atypicals to seek out our services on their own accord. But when someone has been classified as an exposure risk for revealing atypicals to the public, it’s usually within everyone’s best interests that they’re brought here as soon as possible.”
“Atypicals?” Sam repeats. The way that Agent Green says the word suggests that he isn’t talking about the usual definition of something strange and unusual.
“People with special abilities that exist beyond the realm of normal human aptitude,” he explains. “People like you, Ms. Barnes.”
His reassuring smile doesn’t fade, but she remains uneasy at the stiff formality that he maintains alongside his veneer of friendliness. Her throat and chest constrict tighter at his mention of special abilities. Can she even be considered to have something that is both “special” and an “ability” if it is a curse that she can’t control? She can never choose when she goes away or where she goes, and most of the time she barely gets any warning of when she is about to leave beyond the physical sensations of lightheadedness and a lack of air in her lungs. She feels something similar right now, actually, which sends a fresh burst of fear straight to her heart. She can’t disappear now, not in front of this stranger who already knows that she is different, that she has something inside her that doesn’t obey her.
