“Do you want to…spend less time together?” Martin tries to hide the growing panic inside his chest, but it wraps around his vocal cords and laces itself in every word. 

“No, I like y-...having lunch with you. And…and living with you,” Jon hurries to say and Martin manages to relax. Jon on the other hand grips his spoon so tightly that his knuckles are turning white. “But I’m also still your boss and I assume Tim was commenting on how…inappropriate our…our situation has become given that I..I am your boss and your flatmate. If I ever…if I ever made you worry that I would kick you out because of something at work or would fire you because of something you said to me during dinner in ou-...my flat, I need you to know that I wouldn’t! God knows you could already report me to HR so much that I wouldn’t get a job in my next three lives.

“Here, let me show you,” Jon says and comes over to Martin. He takes the knife from Martin, puts his hand around Martin’s and carefully presses the knife handle back into Martin’s palm. “You want to hold it firmly, but not too tightly.”

Martin’s mind goes completely blank, only able to focus on the sensation of Jon holding his hand. It is painfully intimate, the way Jon is pressed against Martin’s side so closely that Martin can smell his shampoo. It smells sweet and almond-scented and for a moment the room starts to become blurry in front of Martin’s eyes. He is sure that Jon can feel the throbbing of his pulse grow faster and faster.
