The Antics of Softboy Pillowman is an original webcomic that takes place in the bedroom of an eight-year-old named Chris. Chris’s homemade city of toys features many fun, unique residents, but his favorite (and the cuddliest and most creative of them all) is the plush toy Softboy Pillowman. Nearly all of Chrisville loves Softboy, as he encourages everyone to be the toy they want to be. The only Chrisville resident who resents Softboy’s presence is Dirk- a wooden sword passed down from Chris’s grandfather who has a very specific and old-fashioned attitude about how playtime should work.

It’s time to sit in Softboy’s serious corner for a second. This comic continues from where last week left off.

NOTE: Since this is a short comic, obviously Softboy can’t go too deeply into the ramifications of all of his advice. It’s important to remember how Softboy pointed out that he and his friends live in a place where Dirk is an outlier in a sea of accepting people. Softboy and the other residents of Chrisville can afford to give Dirk the chances they do because they live in a safe environment, and there’s no chance of people with harmful beliefs being in charge.

Softboy meant it when he said that the right thing to do will be different for everyone. Not everyone lives in a situation like this. It’s OK if some people can’t be as forgiving as quickly, or if they can’t afford to give someone a chance when that person has the power in their community and are using it to do harm. Sometimes, it IS best to leave, no matter what.

But this comic is about a community where there’s safety and hope, and Softboy is going to make sure that it stays that way.

This week, we’re looking at a timelapse of how I draw a character who hasn’t been seen that much in recent posts, despite being in the comic from the very beginning: Sergeant Block!

As you can see, even I confuse myself with how his limbs work.

So this is how the Dirk arc ends. Not with a bang, but with a montage.

Well. It’s done. It took almost an entire year, but it’s done. Thank you so much for witnessing the longest story arc of this blog. I hope you enjoyed it, dear readers, and that you’ll stick around for more content! However, keep in mind that I won’t be attempting another arc like this for a LONG time.

The costumes and scenes in this montage were, of course, based on the plot of the Wind in the Willows musical, specifically the 2017 London Palladium production.

Fun fact: The montage was going to include the moment where the Chief Weasel antagonizes Rat during Toad’s trial. However, due to my crumbling sanity and sleep schedule, I had to limit my drawing this week.

Time to answer the question we’ve all been wondering: just what did Sergeant Block do to earn that “Sergeant” status?

Answer: .... not much, really.

Fun fact: One time, while showing my comic to a college friend, he was semi-jokingly shocked to see a “military” character. He was so against the thought of it that he distrusted Sergeant Block right away, even though the point of the character was that most “boy’s toys” are made with action/fighting-based personalities and backstories in mind, but that Chris would totally disregard that in order to let a gentle, pacifist personality flourish. In Chrisville, it doesn’t matter what past you were given. What matters is the life you make for yourself now.
