Hispanic Heritage Month + Band of Brothers

For the last day of Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15 - Oct. 15), I rolled up my sleeves to do some research on Latinos who served in Easy Company.

Here's who I found…

Ynez M. "Tito" Mendoza

Ynez was born September 22, 1925 in California. His parents, Jose and Carlota, were both born in Mexico and had immigrated to the U.S.

He enlisted in Los Angeles in January 1944, and joined Easy Company as a replacement. In October 1944, he was wounded in the lower leg by artillery, but returned to the line December 1944.

After the war, he married and had 3 children. He died on June 30, 2011 at the age of 85.

Wiliam S. "Guillermo" Metzler

William was born and raised in Naco, Arizona. His parents, Francisco and Julia, were born in Hermosillo, in the Mexican state of Sonora. They married, and later immigrated with their first two sons to Arizona, where William and his other siblings were later born.

He was living in Los Angeles when he volunteered for the U.S. Army in August 1942. He was one of the original members of Easy Company and trained at Toccoa.

He was killed in action in Normandy on June 24, 1944, at the age of 22.

Sergio G. Moya

Sergio was born on February 24, 1921, in San Francisco, California.

In February 1943, he enlisted in the U.S. Army. He was one of the original members of Easy Company and trained at Toccoa.

He was on the C-47 plane with Lt. Meehan that was shot down over Normandy by German anti-aircraft fire on June 6th, 1944 (D-Day). He died at the age of 23.

Sergio G. Moya

lHe is not representing in Band of Brothers, he died on D-Day. But his story is important to tell. 

Sergio Garibay Moya was born February 24, 1921 to Jesus and Maria Moya in Guadalajara, Mexico. He had a younger sister Genovena born in 1923.

In 1930 they were living in San Francisco and the household had not yet become citizens. They were living on his father’s earnings as a barber. When Sergio signed up for the draft, he stated he was 5′10″ and weighed 154 pounds with brown eyes and black hair

 He enlisted February 19, 1943.

When his father was petitioning for naturalization, his son was at Camp Roberts, California. 

Little is known about his training but he was with Easy Company when they jumped into Normandy. He was in the plane with Thomas Meehan, when it got shot down by the Germans. Everyone onboard died. The plane continued to burn for three days.

The site honor states says: “He was a passenger on a C-47 Skytrain from the 439th Troop Carrier Group when they were hit by German Anti-Aircraft fire over Beuzeville-au-Plain, approximately two miles south of the town of Sainte-Mere-Eglise on the morning of the D-Day invasion. The entire crew of 5 men and 17 paratroopers from the 101st Airborne Division were killed. On June 6, 2000, a memorial was established at the Beuzeville-au-Plain church to Meehan, and the other paratroopers killed when their plane was shot down.” 

In Biggest Brother, a book by Larry Alexander, he is listed as a medic.

He was awarded the purple heart after his death.

He is buried at Jefferson Barracks in Saint Louis, Missouri.

Remembering Sergio Moya who was killed on D-Day. He was born in Mexico in 1921. He moved to Los Angeles with his father before enlisting in San Francisco. Before the war he worked in metal manufacturing. Enlisting on February 19, 1943 in the army. He held the rank of private first class throughout his service. Sadly not much is known about his service. Winters noted in his book that Sergio was a medic. He was onboard Lt. Meehan’s plane and all aboard where killed when the plane was struck by German anti- aircraft fire. Receiving a purple heart after his death. He is buried under a group headstone at Jefferson Barracks Cemetery.
