“goblin emperor”
sorry don't mean to blast your page but OMG THE GOBLIN EMPEROR seriously one of the best worldbuilding fantasy books i've read - i also love the biracial dynamics like when he walks into the goblin embassy and he almost cries because he finds people who look like him - and also his realization that FRIENDS ARE GOOD and he's allowed to mutually care about his guards - and his whole thing about his mother and his faith -the question of radical anarchy and THE WHOLE BOOK
omg, that aspect of Maia being an unreliable narrator and reading through the lines to his trauma was so f*ing well-written in the book - not to mention Csevet's competing trauma too omg
--- yes the scene where he’s nearly crying in the goblin embassy was so lovely, all of that is like-- *chef’s kiss*
don’t feel bad about blasting my page, i don’t post enough anymore to have so many notification’s that i’m not delighted for more.
And yes-- Csevet’s trauma also is like, a layer there, I’m not super articulate at the moment but I am In Agreement.

omg that sleeping system bothered me as well!! i'm like dude, on duty for 12 hours does not an effective guard make
I have now had very serious conversations about this on at least three different social media platforms with like five different people, it seems to me that there’s literally nobody who read the book and was like “seems rational” so like. should we start a letter-writing campaign? “we want the nohecharei to unionize”
Although as I pointed out on Dreamwidth in the last iteration of this discussion, I mean, how many shifts are you really going to want in a job where if your coworkers fuck up even during a shift you’re not present for, you’re expected to commit ritual suicide? It’s gonna keep your pool of applicants small, I think. So like. Balance that.
But what gets me-- even if you assume they really do nap while the Emperor’s sleeping, so like, ok, if they do an overnight shift every other night, they can get 2-3 hours sleep apiece while he’s out depending on whether they’ll sleep concurrently or not, and while it’s just a light doze, still it’s not like they’re breaking rocks for 12 hours, and if you assume kind of a monk-like devotion to their work where leisure time becomes important, you still run into a separate issue: you want your guard to have good reflexes, right? and good weapons and fighting skills? that means ongoing practice. When is that supposed to happen, when the vast majority of his shift guarding you is spent standing motionless as part of the scenery??? how are they supposed to stay sharp? even if maza skills are largely mental, they need to be fit, and the guards are gonna really suffer if they can’t work out sometimes. so like. When! When is their cardio! I must know.

beshelar is So Adorable, oh my gosh, your goblin emperor posting has brought me sheer delight
I don’t know why I’m so into Beshelar but he has accidentally become my Relatable Everyman here. He’s just so... like, he’s an uptight kind of jerk, and I Get That, ok.
This whole fanfic I’ve written has literally 0 Maia POV, I decided that was my weird trope that I was gonna stick with, and so it bounces around but it’s got a lot of dear Beshelar realizing he’s in a little bit over his head and attempting to Deal With It.
Also I just wrote Maia semi-losing his virginity from Csethiro’s POV, and it was enormously satisfying, so. I mean, for me, I don’t know how he felt about it, we haven’t really gotten to the reaction part. (cut for slightly nsfw text, describing a male orgasm, and i love Csethiro because she is a fkn nerd, so this is maybe less sexy than you’d think but she is definitely enjoying herself a lot. no this is just a tiny snippet, i promise the rest will be worth waiting for.) I don’t think I could write it from Maia’s POV, I think he’s so shy he’d fade to black even to describe it to himself. But Csethiro has never really balked from anything in her life and isn’t about to start now.
you went to library school!?!? that's so cool!!! XDDD i'm two semesters from finishing at simmons just now! if it's in your comfort zone, may i ask which school you went to? are you working in a library now - what type? sorry, i'm just so psyched that one of my favorite authors that i've been reading since literally high school *high school* (yeah, all about that vorkosigan saga baby) is in the same profession as me!!! aahhh! anyway, flameo hotman XD
I went to Maryland, sometime before they renamed the school to whatever acronym it is now! While I was in library school I worked for a law firm in DC, and my first job out of library school was a small private college library (I was one of three! full time! employees! Me, the library director, and the circ manager, and everything else was part-timers.) and then I worked for almost six years in a large-ish public library system, so I have hit all the major Library Types (Special, Academic, Public, for the non-librarians) (unless School is separate from Academic? whatever. I have hit all the major Adult Library Types). :D
I’ve been out of libraries (writing full time) for a year-ish now, but I’m about to look for some kind of more straightforward gainful employment again, so... possibly back to the library world! Who knows! In any case, I definitely became a librarian because I knew fannish librarians when I was a wee person, so the circle of nerd librarians continues!

...i definitely thought it was sam vines for a very long time
I mean probably because a bunch of people were calling me that all the time! :D
Honestly I don’t care overmuch, it’s just really bizarre to me that in a fandom where SAM VIMES is a pretty key character, a whoooooole bunch of people saw “samvimes” and though “oh hey, vines”. :D
I know you've said you're not writing about Flight Lieutenant Jean-Jacques Leroy, but now that you've got that little summary of him stuck in my head along with all your other brilliant WWII, 1940's/50's characterizations, I can't stop imagining how his romance with Isabella Yang would go in that time period. Though I'm not exactly a JJ fan, I do admire his and Isabella's relationship, especially at the point of his failure. Certainly theirs would be a romance for the ages.
That last one was really a comment than an "ask" lol. But now I'm headcanoning WWII Yang/Leroy. Perhaps Isabella was one of the Chinese Canadians who fought against the Chinese Exclusion Act in Canada and thought Chinese shouldn't fight for a country that didn't want them, but her brother was one who thought that volunteering for the war instead of waiting for a draft would increase chances of Chinese Canadian citizenship. So he volunteers and she's torn through the whole war
Meanwhile, Jean-Jaques Leroy is struggling with being the only French Canadian in the RCAF, proud to be a pilot, but stumbling over the English verbs. I'm struggling with the parents. On the one hand, in canon they are his coaches, and clearly support him and he would not throw off their expectations. On the other hand, JJ's father would have been the right age to have fought in WWI and could be hold strong negative feelings towards it.
Perhaps both of his parents are fighting against conscription, consider the war an Imperialist one that French Canada shouldn't be involved in, and knee deep in the controversies of Quebec. Yet, they're proud of their son's skills and want him to be recognized. But the government wants to use him as a symbol of successful integration without creating French-speaking units while his parents are fighting for more French-speaking units across the board and want him to be a hero for
for French Canada. Anyway, thank you for inspiring my Sunday morning musings and also for your wonderful fic. I really enjoyed the read and will probably re-read more slowly in the summer sometime. Hope your spring is going well!
This was a great ask chain since frankly everything I know about the Canadian Home Front I learned from watching Bomb Girls (hashtag Betty Was Wronged), so thank you for teaching me some interesting facts and tidbits! And I do agree that Isabella is by far and away the best thing about JJ, lol, he can’t be that bad if she seems to like him so much.
remembering 9/11 in a time of covid-19
idk - the 20th anniversary of 9/11...it seems so weird to me to have all these podcasts and documentaries and displays and whatnot coming up right now
and i’m not even getting into the imperialism, racism, and nationalism of the post-9/11 years
it’s just that i remember those days and weeks after 9/11 - town vigils, memorials popping up everywhere, people putting flags or signs in their window, black draped store windows, half mast flags, lots and lots of Enya (apparently she did *not* authorize those remixes with the 9/11 sound bites) - grieving over the almost 3,000 people who died
and there’s such a strange disconnect for me to see these 9/11 memorials in the middle of the ongoing global pandemic
where are the covid-19 vigils? the candle lighting ceremonies? the tribute songs? conservatively 650,000 American deaths alone by 9/11/21 (or possibly more like 1,000,000) 4.5 million deaths globally (or possibly waaaaay more) - and we’re casting back our memories to those *almost* 3,000 deaths from 20 years ago.
it’s not that i think those deaths are meaningless or shouldn’t be remembered (again, not even touching on the nationalism part of it) - but the way we’re doing it among the current hundreds of thousands of deaths that seem to be going completely unremarked in comparison - it’s just such a strange disconnect to me
remembering the dead among the dying - isn’t that the way of it
Can anyone find Waldo/Wally in this picture???
It’s been driving me and my family up the wall, we’ve spend hours on Thanksgiving trying to find this dude, and when I cheated (ok, but after literal HOURS) to find the answer online, the editions are different from ours! We don’t have any binoculars, and the shoe is in a different place! (By the waving person in green with the yellow neckline)
Waldo is *not* by the witch
I’m pretty sure this edition in the above picture is the same as ours, even though it’s British, because the shoe is in the same place.
If you can find the Waldo in this edition of the picture, taken from here:
