Check out the latest interview with Middlesbrough's own 'Serinette'. The 4- piece are another prime example of the sheer talent that is embedded in the North East, expressed through their self- titled EP, which highlights some of the bands best work to date. Make you sure catch them at one of their upcoming shows and keep watch for more new releases on the way.
Give us a bit of background on Serinette to start off with
Serinette are an original band who love to create music. We write for ourselves and hope people like it....we try to create music thats interesting to us and doesn't follow a routine or structure or a typical sound. Stu and Lou set out with this project in 2010 after our last band Squarewave ended. We had no ambition apart form to write and record. The stresses of keeping 5 people organised were what we wanted to avoid.
The band came together about 18 months ago and have been gigging, writing and recording together since.
Are you all into similar kind of music, or is there a lot of variety?
We all love music. It plays a huge part in our day to day lives. We listen to a variety - Foo Fighters, Michael Jackson, Radiohead, The Who, Nickleback, Janes Addiction, Zero7, Portishead, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Queens of the stoneage, Meatloaf, Alanis Morisette.
We appreciate local music, some of the bands we gig with at the moment are better than what you hear on the radio. The variety of what we like is massive the common ground lies in that were very passionate about music in general and have appreciation for all genres.
You have an EP out, what was the recording process of that like?
Our EP 'Serinette' was something we wanted to put together again for ourselves. Most on the material was written and recorded over a year ago. Some of it we've moved on from some we still play. We had/have so much material and ideas we just wanted to put our favourites at the time on record. The recording process will go from sitting around writing/jamming ideas or someone programming and recording a demo on their lap top and emailing it around then after playing the song....we will record in a studio. This EP was done in parts due to time and money. The process in the studio generally is Lou laying down a ghost track then Paul drums, Stu bass, Dave guitars leaving Lou with generally 30 mins to record final vox and bvs! Then we usually get the producer to do a rough mix, go away and listen, come back to master the track. If we have the time money and space we'd love to do the whole process ourselves.
Also, what was the initial reaction to it?
The EP was received well. Everyone seems to enjoy our music the nice thing is we generally have something for every one. 'Turquoise World' is dancy and poppy, 'Angel of mine' rocky and 'After hours' is soulful and rocky.
You’ve played a lot of venues all over the area, have you got a favourite one?
We have played lots of places over the last 18 months. Our favourites are Mink because its always fun and different each time we play. They always have a variety of original music on. Its a very different venue to most places in Middlesbrough. Dr Browns because Leons hilarious and The Keys because it have pretty lights in the floor!
Finally, what are your plans for the rest of this year?
We are making a video for our latest single - 'Russia' which is number 16 in the tourdates.com charts and recently on BBC Tees with Bob Fischer who is a great supporter of our stuff. Were recording the vid in one of Mimas studio spaces with the help of Ste Irving a local professional artist and friend. Were also due to record 'Pushing me slowly' which is a song Stu and I wrote for Squarewave, our old band. We revamped it and play it in Serinettes set. Everyone loves it so were going to record it and do a live video hopefully in September. And throughout that gigs n gigs n gigs....and our day jobs. We have a few already lined up at Mink, The Westgarth and the Empire, which were looking forward too!
