Solo Artist of the Year Interview - Hazel English
It’s been quite a busy few months for you since the release of debut track Never Going Home with 3 tracks released in the past 6 months. How has the year been from your point of view?
It’s been a really great and productive year for me. I didn't really expect things to progress so quickly and I have definitely had to get outside of my comfort zone but it has been very rewarding. I have learnt a lot and really tried to push my songwriting which has been fun. I can’t wait to see what 2016 brings.Â
You said previously that Never Going Home was about your move from Australia, your country of birth, to California. How was that process of writing the song? Was it planned that your debut track would be on this topic or did it assist in becoming a coping mechanism at all?
Writing Never Going Home actually happened very easily and naturally. It was just on my mind at the time - I was reflecting on how far I’d come since my introduction to life in California. I was, and still am, completely in love with the Bay Area and so it was kind of like a love song to a place. I didn’t plan on it being my debut track but it just made sense and felt right.
You are in the studio right now I believe writing more music. Is there an expected release new date for new music?
I don’t have a date for you unfortunately but I am very excited to share the new songs soon
Could you give us an insight into what we could expect from the new material?
The new songs have a similar vibe but differ a little in the theme - as all songs do. I write very much in the present about what I’m dealing with at the time and since i’m a very introspective person there is usually always something to write about. You could probably use my songs as a map to navigate your way around the strange things that go on in my head!Â
Are there longer term plans in place for Hazel English or is it a case of release this latest material and take it from there?
Yes definitely, I’m always working on new stuff. I get restless when I’m not writing songs so you can expect more material soon. And possibly a tour…
And finally, just for selfish reasons if nothing else, when can we expect you in the UK playing your fantastic music?
