dabi’s age

just a head’s up, i’m doing these calculations under the assumption that dabi is todoroki touya. at this point, i think we’ve all just accepted that this theory is canon, so... yeah.

at this point in the manga, enji is 46, fuyumi is 23, natsuo is 19, and shouto is 16, with ages of rei and touya being unknown. with the release of dabi’s birthday earlier this week, we can more or less pinpoint the age of touya.

now, i have to bring this up. there is a theory that touya and fuyumi are twins, though this would go against the birth-date we were just given for dabi. it’s entirely possible that dabi says his birthday is january 11th because that’s the day touya “died” and dabi took his place, but this post is just in case that theory isn’t the case.

we know that enji was 20 when he realized that he himself would never be able to surpass all might with his limitations, and as such, he soon began looking for a wife. we can assume that he either found rei not long after, marrying her either at 21 or just before.

now, i don’t really like thinking about rei and enji banging, but it’s kinda needed here.

fuyumi was born on december 6, when enji was 23, seeing as she’s 23 now and he’s 46. assuming she wasn’t born prematurely, that means she was conceived in early to mid march, though the exact date doesn’t really matter. what matters is that this is roughly two months after january 11th, meaning it’s entirely possible for rei to get pregnant at the time.

this is the youngest dabi would be, if the twin theory is incorrect. that would mean he’s eleven months older than fuyumi, and since shouto just turned 16 on january 18th, dabi would have just turned 24. enji would have been 22 at the time he was born, seeing as his birthday is august 8th.

now, what’s the oldest dabi could possibly be?

well, this again goes back to whenever enji got married. it’s safe to assume that enji would waste no time in trying to find a wife, keeping the search and courting to a minimum, then marrying rei and getting her pregnant as quickly as possible. it’s not something i like thinking about, but this is endeavor we’re talking about. i’m also going to assume that he didn’t sleep with her until he was married, seeing as the number two hero wouldn’t want any scandals, as well as the fact that he’s a rather traditional man.

for dabi to have been born january 11th, that means he must have been conceived around may, though he’s a bit more iffy. touya is noted to have been a sickly kid, so it’s not unlikely that he might have been born prematurely. so, let’s just say he was conceived between may and july to be safe.

enji was either about to turn 21 when he married rei or was already 21 for the reasons i stated earlier. if he was about to turn 21, that means he began his search for someone with a suitable quirk, married rei, and put his plan of having stronger kids into motion all in the span of less than one year. it seems a little far-fetched, but it’s still possible, meaning that enji would have been 20 when touya was conceived. this would make him 21 when touya was born, meaning dabi would have just turned 25 in the manga.

if he had married rei at 21, then touya would have been born when he was 22, following the first scenario and making dabi 24 currently in the manga. so dabi is either 24 or 25 in the manga.

now, which is more likely?

that brings us to the only picture we have of todoroki touya, the one in the butsudon shrine.

we know that, in that picture, touya was either 13 or 14, seeing as touya is either 8 or 9 years older than shouto. we know that shouto began his training when he was 5 years old, and after a while his mother was hospitalized. shouto was still 5 then, and since touya’s birthday is only a week before shouto’s, touya must have still been either 13 or 14 when rei went into the hospital. we also know that, not long after rei was hospitalized is when touya “died” and sent rei into an even worse spiral.

what we don’t know is if touya “died” when shouto was 6, or if he was still 5. if shouto was 6, he would have either been 14 or 15, and if he was 5, he would have been either 13 or 14.

what we need to do now is look at natsuo, who’s roughly three and a half years older than shouto. regardless of whether shouto was 5 or 6 at the time of touya’s death, natsuo would have been 9, seeing as it wasn’t more than a few months after rei’s hospitalization that touya “died”, so it couldn’t have been far enough into the summer for that to happen yet, as shouto’s birthday is in january and she was hospitalized when he was 5.

natsuo and touya were incredibly close, as fuyumi notes. it’s more likely for a 9 year old to be closer to a 13/14 year old than a 14/15 year old. furthermore, touya looks very young. i’m willing to bet that picture was taken when he was 13, and was likely the last picture taken before his death, seeing as there aren’t a lot of pictures up in the todoroki household. this further supports that he was either 13 or 14 when he “died, depending on whether shouto was 5 or 6 when that happened (which will hopefully be confirmed soon).

so what does all of this lead me to believe? in my opinion, it’s more likely that dabi has just turned 24 years old as of the most recent chapter, seeing as shouto is now 16. he could also be 25, if you want to believe that he decided to have a quirk marriage, found rei, married, and impregnated her all in less than one year, which is, again, a little much in my opinion.

conclusion? dabi is 24 years old.
