Send “Memory Stone” to get a flashback from my muses past.
“Hey Mom, can I ask ya a question?” The youthful Chris looked up as he helped his Mother with washing the greasy remnants of their fish and chips from their plates.
Rebecca glanced down to her son, and she offered a fond smile to him, though she obviously looked worn from today’s work, “Of course, what’s on ya mind?”
Handing a plate to her, Chris now glanced aside nervously as he gently twisted the sponge in his hand, “I...Was w-wanting t’ask...” Bright blue eyes gazed to his Mother’s eyes, wide and curious, “...What was Dad like?”
The plate nearly fell out from her hands, but thankfully, she caught it without too much worry. A perplexed expression was shown, and a confused chuckle did answer Chris’ question at first whilst she racked her brain for an appropriate answer. One hand reached back to fumble with the back of her neck, and she chewed on the inside of her cheek,
“Ya Dad was...Interesting. I was young when I fell for ‘im, an’ he was sweet, an’ charming, an’ jus’...” A wishful sigh did pass her lips, and the young Chris only poked his tongue out at the icky talk of love, “...But he also had a lot o’faults at times...He was brash, self-centred, an’ got ‘imself in a lotta trouble...”
”What kinda trouble did Dad get into?” He was sucked into her words suddenly, starved of information of his Dad for so long, as he was much too young the last time they were together to remember him.
“..Ah...W-Well...Ya see...” Rebecca shrugged, and turned back to scrub the already-clean dishes to distract herself briefly, “...He did bad things, an’ wasted lotta our money, which is why I work so hard now, an’...” Another sigh left her, but there was no affection, just bitterness, “...He left us, Chris, but I’ll say he left me with one good thing.”
Chris looked puzzled, obviously too young to still comprehend the severity of his Dad’s actions, but understood his Dad had done something naughty, which he knew was bad!
“You, an’ I’d go through all them years again if I got t’have ya once more!” She leaned across, her lips softly kissed his head before she ruffled his thick mop of blond hair, and Chris reacted with a retching noise and then a embarrassed giggle,
”Mom, that’s for babies!”
“I know, an’ ya still m’baby, now, go pick out a movie for us t’watch tonight, an’ I’ll jus’ finish this up ‘ere!” She smiled, and watched as an excited Chris dashed out the kitchen, thankful that children were so easily distracted from the world’s troubles. Eventually, she thought, he wouldn’t stay innocent for long.
