‘Portrait of Loïe Fuller as a Butterfly’ (1901) by Benjamin Joseph Falk. I encountered this photograph last spring at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. It was part of the ‘Toulouse-Lautrec and the stars of Paris’ exhibit which was one of the most illuminating and immersive exhibits I’ve seen in a long time. I wish I could go back and experience it again! They also had a hand-colored short film of Loïe dancing that was mesmerizing. Loïe Fuller was an actress and dancer known for her ‘serpentine dance’ where she used elaborate silk costumes as an extension of her expressive movements. She is considered one of the pioneers of modern dance. 🦋 #Loiefuller #serpentinedance (at Museum of Fine Arts, Boston) https://www.instagram.com/p/CAtqtqcJWnz/?igshid=1m4gny49wdlmf
