Moderator Chris organized these as a test run for the concept* in our server to see if it would work out. The turnout ( 21 people ) was so great it had to be split into two separate comics, lest the template be too small. Here to happily report that both ran without any major hitch!
The comics are rather tall, open image in new tab to zoom if they're hard to read.
GIF version of comic #0a and more information about the concept and how it was organized can be found beneath the read-more :
*The idea of a "relay comic", ( which is not original to us btw ) is that each participant draws one panel and passes the comic onto the next person ( like a relay race ). The story is improvised as we go along, so each participant has the opportunity to take it in a new direction as they build upon previous panels to create a sequential-yet-spontaneous course of events.
The names of all those who signed up were put on a list, list put through an order randomizer, then cut in half. First 10 names assigned to #0a, the latter 10 to #0b. We let this list determine order of turns. The 21st artist was signed in late and written up end of list on #0a without issue.
Everyone had 24 hours each to complete their panel once they got to their turn. Nobody missed their deadline! Had someone ran out of time, they'd be moved to the bottom of the queue ( aka. last panel ) and forced to wait their turn again.
Standard for acceptable drawing quality was ( and shall remain for any future relay comics ) stick figures. We would enthusiastically accept stick figures as long as the characters are identifiable. Expectations for quality ought to be low for what is supposed to be a fun game. An important goal is that no one feel dissuaded from signing up just because they're not confident in their drawing ability. The point is not to make something pretty to look at. The 24 hour deadline was deliberately designed to be as low as possible while still fair ( equally accommodating to every time zone ) in order to promote half-assery. Which, impressed to say it evidently failed to do! Chris hopes this is just a byproduct of excitement among the test subjects UH, he means artists, and that the quality of art may decrease over time should we organize more of these.
From delivery of template to first panel-artist, to delivery of last panel: Comic #0a took 1 week, one and a half hours between 11 people. Comic #0b between 10 finished a little earlier, taking 5 days and 22 hours to complete. Based on how this test run played out, having between min. 6 to max. 12 people per comic seems ideal for this template.
Is that a Mettatenna Haven relay comic #1 I smell on the horizon? Guess you'll just have to stay tuned!

💌 Right Person, Wrong Universe for flavourless_fiction
Details/Tags: Fic, Teen, Creator Chose Not to Use Archive Warnings, Alternate Universe - Canon Divergence, Alternate Universe - Soulmates, Unreliable Narrator, Explicit Language, Past Character Death, Alpha/Beta/Omega, Dynamics, Omega Tim Drake (DCU), Alpha Jason Todd, Enemies to Friends, Developing Relationship, Unrequited Love, Angst, Ambiguous/Open Ending, POV Third Person, Limited POV Tim Drake (DCU)
Summary: Tim Drake is on the run in Europe with the smoldering ruins of his life left behind in Gotham. Bruce Wayne isn’t dead. He can’t be. Jason Todd is an unwelcome ally in his search—until he isn’t. This doesn’t end well for anyone. (Or, unrequited soulmates for the 2026 Red Birds’ Nest Server Exchange set in Red Robin #1 (Vol. 1) 2009, featuring my version of the omegaverse.)
💌 Faded for Jaytimhuh
Details/Tags: Fic, Teen, No Archive Warnings Apply, Alternate Universe - Soulmates, Soulmate-Identifying Marks, Romantic Soulmates, Misunderstandings, Jason Todd is Red Hood, Tim Drake is Red Robin (DCU), POV Jason Todd, Jason Todd is a Batfamily Member, Post-Jason Todd's Death, Batfamily and Jason Todd Have a Good Relationship, Pre-Relationship, Developing Relationship, Dick Grayson is a Menace, Guilt, I used Dick to further the plot
Summary: Jason was a bit of a romantic. Dick loved to give him shit for it, Damian didn't get it, and Tim? Tim was… well he wasn't really indifferent but he wasn't not indifferent? It was weird. Soulmarks were standard, everyone had something that matched with their beloved. Jason's happened to be on his collarbone, but low set enough that he could easily hide it. It wasn't really a taboo topic to talk about soulmates and marks but Jason noticed that Tim seemed to avoid the topic.
💌 [art] family photo (or something) for kiiseult

Summary: Jason sizes Drake up. He’s short. Shorter than Jason would expect for a highly rated security professional. He’s thin and lithe, and honestly Jason’s not sure he trusts a bodyguard who doesn’t have any visible scars. Drake’s features are soft, slight. Hair swooping, artfully tousled, to frame his face. He’s cute, attractive. He also doesn’t look like he can bench more than a hundred pounds. If Jason did have a stalker, which he doesn’t, he doubts Timothy Drake could do anything about it.
💌 Cuteness Aggression for penamacet

Summary: Magic has rules. Some of them are… blurry. It saves the heart destined to love you—your name on their lips, and theirs echoing in every resonant beat of your heart. Soulmates bound by a power greater than themselves. Demanding and corrosive, magic forgot about human free will. And about how stupid humans could be. Jason didn’t think Robin was stupid. Which made the teenager an obvious threat. What the fuck was he trying to achieve by putting himself in danger just to force a soulmate bond with Jason?
💌 Let's get together over Coffee and Tulips. for Longcat (NarretTwist)

Before Tim could start again, Jason interrupted, “Rhododens; the flower symbolizing caution and danger due to its toxic, nectar-filled blooms. Tim, someone sent you this as a warning, it wasn’t a gift.” Or Where Tim and Jason finally get together with the help of a mysterious bouquet giver.

“It says right here you did,” the knight said, pressing his gloved finger against the parchment.

Written for the red birds' nest server event Costumes & Creatures for the prompt "Zombie"
Tim lands hard on the ground, wet mud seeping into his pants and squelching between his fingers. Cold rain trails down his neck as he watches, horrified, transfixed, as a bloody hand claws its way up through the earth.
What the fuck?
The hand, coated in a mixture of blood and mud, jerks strangely in the air before the fingers twitch and move to grasp at the mud.
Here Lays Jason Todd.
The fingers dig deep gouges in the mud, rucking up wet grass and turf. It’s searching, reaching.
Beloved son.
The hand reaches up, up and an arm extends behind it. It bends awkwardly at the elbow as the hand clenches open and shut in mid air.
Gone too soon.
Movement, next to the arm. Fingers wriggle like worms out of the mud. Nails scraped off and missing.
What the fuck.
The second arm reaches up and out, and both hands brace as they strain against the press of the rain and earth.
A body pulls itself out.
Dead eyes stare blankly past Tim as the hands pull the limp form further and further out of the grave.
The body frees itself from its prison of mud and wood and maggots.
It gasps at the air, gagging on a mouth full of wet dirt, chest heaving.
The suit its wearing is ragged and coated in mud.
Finally (finally) it pulls its feet free from the earth that wants to swallow it back down and the body drops, strings cut. Deep blue eyes track Tim’s movement as he tries to shift to his knees. He crawls forward, careful not to get too close.
The rain falls heavy and quiet around them.
The boy from the grave lets his mouth open and close, open and close, teeth rotted and black.
A hand, still bloody and wet darts forward with unexpected speed and latches onto Tim’s wrist. He tries not to scream.
The mouth opens and closes, a strange gurgling sound making its way from the boy’s throat.
Tim lifts a shaky hand to wipe mud from the boy’s face.

Costumes and Creatures prompt: Different Hero costume
Panic filled Tim as he dove into his closet, furiously tossing the clothes about. He was already late for the time that they had set to leave, and he was nowhere near ready or prepared.
The bright spot was Jason was apparently just as unaware as Tim that the party was supposed to be a costume party. His boyfriend had panicked right alongside Tim as Barbara’s pictures pinged on their phone with all the early arrivals decked out in fun costumes.
They wore a costume every night when they patrolled Gotham, why would they think that their group of friends had planned an actual costume party? And on top of that, since it was their fellow Gotham vigilantes that were in attendance, they couldn’t even swap or utilize their real uniforms.
Clothes piled behind Tim as he continued frantically looking for something, anything that could work and save him from the merciless teasing of the others that he’d forgotten something again.
Jason had seen the text and booked it out of sight to try and find something on his own too, but now reappeared, defeated. “Tim I can’t find anything–”
“Ah-ha!” Tim cheered in triumph as he pulled an old shirt out of the closet. The black shirt with red symbol was the easiest costume in the world, but no one could deny it was a costume so–
“Dibs!” Jason shouted as he lunged towards Tim for the Superboy shirt.
“Fuck off, I found it!” Tim pushed Jason’s face back, desperately squiggling from his grasp. “Kon is my super friend!”
Jason scoffed as he used his larger frame to pin Tim down and make another grab for the shirt. “I’ll fill it out better than you could ever hope too!”
“You wish! This one is in my size!”
They tussled on the ground another moment, but eventually Jason got his thighs around Tim’s waist and snagged his wrists high above his head. Tim glared up at him, panting, but finally released the shirt so Jason could snatch it up.
“Hey, why is this a small?” Jason whined as he struggled to push his arm and head through the shirt’s openings. He got stuck with his arm pinned to his side at his elbow when the arm hole wouldn’t let him push past his forearm. The collar of the shirt was stretched across his face, just below his eyes, and he finally gave up, flopping backwards like he was wearing the world’s strangest straight jacket.
“I told you!” Tim laughed as he helped extract Jason from the shirt and triumphantly pulled it over his own head. It fit perfectly.
Jason considered for a moment and then, “actually I have an idea.”
<hr>
“Superman?” Dick laughed in astonishment as Jason walked through the door, followed closely by Tim. “And what? Couldn’t find a costume Tim? You look like you just pulled a shirt out of the closet.”
“I’ll have you know this is an authentic Superboy shirt and I styled my hair like him as well. There was effort in this,” Tim sniffed.
Dick rolled his eyes but refocused on Jason. “And?”
“Get your eyes checked Dickwad, this ain’t a Superman costume,” Jason smirked as he pushed past Dick to enter the main room. He gestured to the inverted symbol on his temporarily borrowed suit as he finally clarified, “Tim and I are a matching set of better Supermen than Superman.”
