A good soldier

One of my brothers has been on a mission in recent years to learn something about our father’s military service during World War II.

Of course we might have learned more when he was alive. My brother and I both regret that we didn’t sit down with him and talk, over a few beers, about his war-time experience. That opportunity ended when he died, in 1992.

He never talked much about his days in the Army. In fact, he seemed content to leave that part of his life behind him. We knew he fought in the Battle of the Bulge and that he was part of a tank crew. That was about it.

After hitting some dead ends, my brother hit pay dirt a few weeks ago. He came up with a two-page document that fills in at least a few of the blanks.

It so happens that our dad enlisted on Nov. 20, 1942, at age 20, and was honorably discharged on Jan. 9, 1946. He was a cannoneer with the Army’s 10th Armored Division. He saw action in Ardennes (Battle of the Bulge), Rhineland and other battles in central Europe and earned three Bronze Stars.
