Sesshoumaru returns to the balcony with a champagne bottle in his hand and a blanket draped over one arm. Kagome’s curled up on the chair, her eyes closed. He smiles and leans in to kiss her nose. She blinks at him, her blue eyes a little blurry.
“Of course you weren’t,” he agrees easily, setting the champagne on the side table. Then, he gently tucks the blanket around her. “Here you go. Are you warm enough, now?”
“Maybe.” She looks at him from under her lashes, the vixen. “I might need a little more warming up.”
“Indeed?” Sesshoumaru arches a brow at her, before busying himself with the champagne bottle. The pop echoes in the pre-dawn quiet, bubbles fizzing as the drink hits the glasses already waiting on the table. He hands her one and grins at her surprised yelp as he scoops her up from the chair. He sits down on her spot and settles her into his lap.
Kagome hums, contended, as she cuddles into the crook of his shoulder. Her head tips to rest against his neck and she takes a slow sip of her champagne. He can’t resist the temptation. He kisses her temple and buries his nose in her hair. His right hand rests on her knee, while the left draws lazy circles on her hip. He can tell the effect his touch has on her even through the blanket by the way she melts into him, by the enticing pink flush blooming across her cheeks.
“I’m so glad to be here with you right now,” Kagome says softly. She reaches a hand from under the blanket, lacing her fingers with his right one. “I would never have believed this is how I’d be ringing in the new year, even six months ago.”
“By having champagne for breakfast?” he teases her.
“I’m having it for a very late night snack, thank you very much!”
Sesshoumaru laughs and she squeezes his hand. She loves to make him laugh. She told him that just a few hours ago. He’s never stayed up the whole night before, not like this. Holding the woman he loves in his arms, tangled up in the bed sheets, talking through the dark hours, lingering in the long silences punctuated by lazy kisses. Was it only in October they met? He’s never felt this connected to anyone in his life. He can no longer imagine what his days—and nights— would look without her.
“I’m glad to have you with me, too, my love,” Sesshoumaru whispers into her ear.
She presses a kiss to the hollow of his throat. He draws another circle on her hip. She sips her champagne, sighs, and settles into the comfortable silence.
They do not have a clear view of the horizon here in the city, but it’s still easy to spot the faint pink and the bright yellow mix and climb up the sky. The first rays of the rising sun questing out, making the glass and metal of the buildings around them gleam.
She turns her head, her fingers brushing against his jaw. “Happy New Year, Sesshoumaru.”
Her lips slant against his in a heady kiss. She tastes of champagne and of dreams come true and as he kisses her back with all of his heart, he swears a solemn vow.
This is how he wants to welcome every new year from now on. And a year from now, when they’re waiting for the next year to dawn, he hopes she’s wearing his ring when their fingers entwine.
