Amourshipping analysis (yuri edition)
So I think it’s well established to most that know that I like amourshipping, obvious I know, but recently I’ve been really intrigued by the idea of amourshipping in a yuri Style. It’s honestly got me thinking of what it would be like if it was the case. So in honor of it being pride month and some encouragement from a mysterious benefactor…👀 I thought it would be interesting to talk about what would be different about amourshipping if it were yuri.
To start I think one of the main differences making a yuri version of amourshipping is that it would change the way people perceive amourshipping. One thing that might make amourshipping in base kind of a turn off for some is that the archatype it goes for is for some, kind of basic. Amourshipping isn’t anything people haven’t seen before granted I think for the archatype it goes for(which is common in a lot of shonen) I think amourshipping does a better job than most. With it being yuri though it changes that a bit cause with making Ash a female it makes it so that instead of the typical boy protagonist and female love interest trope,it gets seen as tomboyish heroine and feminine heroine. With this change people might actually start to give credence to Ash and Serena’s friendship and not just purely the romance. This change in presentation, amourshipping might start to feel like less of a forced overdone trope to some and more of a friends to lovers type deal which granted was kinda of the deal with amourshipping anyway, but with it being yuri it makes it more apparent.
Ash and Serena’s dynamic in the show of two people helping each other improve will get realized more if it were yuri also, with it maybe being seen as less one sided. As it’s stands Ash and Serena’s dynamic to most is seen as girl likes boy and boy doesn’t notice and doesn’t reciprocate, but with this change people might start to see it as more of two friends that help each other improve thoughout the series with there feelings and bond getting stronger as the story progresses and through this lens certain scenes will probably become viewed differently.
I think the kiss scene itself if yuri, would be perceived way differently. It would be less of "Ash finally got kissed by a girl" and more of "Serena is finally showing how she feels" which it something that is often times neglected when talking about the kiss scene which is people get so caught up in the hype of it that they forget that the kiss scene is for Serena’s character first and foremost and amourshipping being yuri I feel would emphasize that more.
The point I’ve been building towards here is that amourshipping as yuri would make it feel more about the characters rather than fan service. I think one of the most important things when talking about shipping that often gets lost in the sauce is the dynamic itself. People get so caught up in hyping up Ash’s side specifically and making him look like the cool male shonen protagonist that Serena’s importance gets shafted by comparison, but with them being both females the conversation shifts to what actually matters which is there actual chemistry and dynamic in the show.
Im not making this to say that amourshipping in yuri is the super superior way to ship theses characters, but more so to point out how the conversation shifts because to be frank the story itself doesn’t really have to change all that much if at all it’s just Ash is a girl, but his dynamics with Serena and how that’s perceived and or framed is definitely different and different in a good way.
This was a pretty fun and interesting post to make so I hope you enjoyed it
I might make an update post talking more about the t4t aspect maybe, but I’ve still got to figure out what to say. In the meantime I just wanted to discuss specifically the yuri aspect of it and how that changes things.
