it’s interesting how in a couple of the japanese version harvest moon games, there was a “best friend” system that was cut out of the western releases.
now, with the 2020 western release of story of seasons: friends of mineral town, they simply call it what it is: same sex marriage, while the japanese release continues to refer to it as the “best friend” system.
the inversion of the conservative becoming the progressive is what’s interesting. now, regardless of it being called the “best friend” system, it DID show two characters of the same sex in wedding attire making vows to each other in a chapel in front of an officiant of some sort, but japanese developers probably couldn’t call it same sex marriage without facing backlash.
despite the popularity of manga and anime featuring queer characters, the japanese queer community faces many prejudices. as of this month, january 2021, same sex couples are not legally recognized. they can get certifications for some benefits, much like same sex couples in the united states before same sex marriage was legalized.
i’m glad that western fans of harvest moon/story of seasons (and maybe even rune factory in the future) get to have same sex marriage without it being sugar coated under some platonic guise, and hopefully other areas of the world that these games are released in will also have the same chance.
