The Frank and Walters / Top September 1991
This is where things start to get a bit sketchy. When I started to collate all my Buzz Club stuff about five years ago I noticed that I stopped writing down who played and when at the end of 1990. At the time we used to send all the fliers to various record shops (hello all the local Our Prices!) and paste all the posters up on all the closed down / boarded up shop fronts (hello Surrey Constabulary!) I never thought to keep much back which is why there are a few blanks – I would love to see a Stone Rosesflier for example.
1990 would be when Danny and myself moved to London and starting to work at record labels – Cherry Red in Danny’s case and Ultimate in mine. We also discovered the joys of clubbing not long after and so while still doing The Buzz Club I just didn’t write anything down any more. This made putting everything together tricky but I think we’ve pretty much done it. It’s been a project of love I throw myself into every now and again, hitting Google to see if anything has cropped up since I last tried and getting in touch with various contacts and ex Buzz Clubbers who have provided me fliers or recordings giving us dates and bands.
So, I’m pretty sure Scorpio Rising played in July of 1991 but since I have no fliers and they never really made any impact on the world I’m going to skip that one and settle on the next one. September 1991,The Frank and Walters and Top.
From Cork, The Frank and Walters were signed to the great London / Irish label Setanta (run byKeith Cullen who now manages My Bloody Valentine) and their debut EP featured this great song ‘Fashion Crisis Hits New York‘ as played on short lived tv show ‘The Beat‘ (seeing this clip reminds me I took Senser to record for The Beat when I worked at Ultimate Records. They actually did the filming at 8am at The Astoria in London, providing breakfast for all the musicians!)
