What I Learned in 2014
(Originally from www.evofficial.com)
It’s a New Year, which means new opportunities, goals and aspirations for everyone. With 2015 here and my trip to New York in a couple of days I just spent some time thinking of everything I’ve learned and accomplished in 2014. I’m laying out my little life lessons here for those of you who care to listen; my hope is that these snippets are of some help to somebody somewhere.
I learned…
…to trust my instincts, they are designed to make me survive and music is my survival, I’ve got to trust my instincts with my art.
…how to appreciate the value of good relationships, not everyone can like you but we live in a world with “people” and I’d rather have good relationships with them.
…that honesty is everything, I was afraid to release this new music, I was afraid to change my name, I was afraid to trust others with my art but I did it and I was honest and I’ve never received such great feedback.
…that you need to be selective with the people you keep around you, influence is a serious thing and I tend to become a reflection of the people I hang out with. Having good people around you is crucial to your success.
…to not be afraid to be myself, I was so caught up trying to be like other people then I realized there is only one of them and there is only one of me.
…that practicing humility is one of the greatest things you can do for yourself and others.
…that art is worth more than money and that is why it generates so much of it.
…to remember to make time for the people who love and care about me, I can get so caught up with working and staying driven that I sometimes forget there are people who genuinely love me and I don’t ever want to lose them.
…that nothing incredibly successful happens with one individual, a team of like minded individuals is crucial for success.
…to make real life connections, a handshake is worth more than an email.
…that it’s ok to be lost, you can often find yourself through the process.
…that my mother is usually right about most things lol
…to deal with losing important people in my life, it happens and it’s just another part of your story
…that constructive criticism is worth more than all the compliments but I still appreciate the hell out of those things, thanks for all the support!
…to make sure you get a regular reality check, mine happens to be the Bob Lefsetz newsletter and I’ve had some honest conversations with Tika Simone, Mike Smith, Stacey Shopsowitz, Juvon Taylor, Brandon Andrew, Brittany Superville and more, thanks guys.
…to plan for the future.
…that even though you plan for the future not everything goes according to plan and you have to learn to deal with it.
…that most people who go down in history for great things didn’t take a “safe” path.
…that fear isn’t necessarily a burden, it gives you something to overcome.
…that love is the most important thing in this world and it’s all anyone really wants.
If you made it this far I’m giving you a virtual handshake, high five, hug whatever, I hope you have an amazing 2015 and thank you for taking this journey with me, it’s far from over but I’m glad to have your company.
Peace,
Seth Dyer
