Empty Tombstones
(A song for an assassin who wants to be king)
I wreak havoc when I’m bored, so better keep me in a cage,
I’ve never really understood when people say “just don’t engage.”
Don’t you get that flying feeling from the blood inside your veins?
Adrenaline is better if I’m fucking entertained.
I’ll choke on laughing ‘till I’m retching when it’s time to draw a knife,
The cobbled pathway that I’ve chosen paved with lightning bolts and spite.
Double cross each intersection then burn down the site,
The ashes of the town blend in perfect with the night.
Don’t ask me if I’m having fun, till hell breaks and I’m on the run,
The threads of my mind burning up and slowly coming undone.
To sleep and then perhaps to dream, then wake again and try to scream.
I’m not a devil but you’ll wonder if I was when I’m done.
I’d stare up at the ceiling if the shadows weren’t solid,
But the patterns in the darkness are as close I get to honest.
A man who’s made a graveyard shouldn’t have to be so modest,
When the tombstones without names are the ones of which I’m fondest.
Paint my porcelain with gold around the edges that I break
They’ll call me fucking beautiful but no longer well made.
Like the crown I’ll never need because the kingdom knows my name.
It only takes a whisper for an empire to cave.
Don’t ask me if I’m having fun till hell breaks and I’m on the run,
The threads of my mind burning up and slowly coming undone.
To sleep and then perhaps to dream, then wake again and try to scream.
I’m not a devil but you’ll wonder if I was when I’m done.
I revel in the revere and fill the recent vacancy
The God of death and nightmares for a planet changing century!
So ask me if I’m having fun, friend to all and friend to none.
The castle falls to pieces as the kingdom’s coming undone.
Sleep and then perhaps you’ll dream, wake and see my grinning teeth
I’m not a devil but you’ll wish I was when we are done.
