Livejournal fic recs for Seth Cohen/Ryan Atwood

I said I would make this list last summer but kept dragging my feet on it! Partly because I wanted to be thorough (word counts, ratings, warnings, etc.) and when you're grabbing fics from lj, you often have to figure that info out on your own. But I finally did it! This is by no means a comprehensive list; there is a lot out there, and you should definitely look around if you love this ship. I just wanted to make a rec list for some that have stuck with me, ones I've bookmarked to keep forever. :) Some are livejournal links, some are Wayback Machine links for deleted fics. All links are on the titles unless it's a fic in multiple parts, in which case I've linked to each part separately.

Two at the end are from personal writer sites since this was the era where people still hosted fanfic on their own sites. I might do a separate rec list for AO3 fics, but this list is to bring attention to fics that haven't received readership in a while since lj is mostly dead.

Cowardly Acts by wistful_fever (who is here on tumblr as @fabella-aka-wistfulfever so show them some love!) ~30k, rated E, warnings for internalized homophobia and homophobic slurs Part 1, Part 2, Part 3a, Part3b, Part 4 God, how do I even begin to talk about this one? There is a lot of angst in this ship (and rightfully so!), but this might be my favorite angsty fic for them because holy shit, it hurts so good. This is a canon divergent AU that was written while s3 was airing. It's set a couple years into the future with Seth and Ryan living in an apartment together while they're sophomores in college. Seth is suffering from some intense internalized homophobia, and Ryan is in so much pain as he waits for Seth to sort it all out, to finally admit he wants to be with Ryan as much as he does. There's a confrontation between the two of them in Part 3b of this fic that will smash your heart into a thousand pieces, but I promise it's an "angst with a happy ending" fic! Excellent self-discovery for Seth in this, and guess what? This lovely author is currently publishing a new fic for this ship for the first time in years so check that out too: Reconcile Yourself

The Complete Book of Questions by dontyouwaitup (formerly aflowerinrain) ~18k, rated M Ryan is searching for something angry beneath everything that's beautiful, and Seth has too many questions. Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4 (these are all Wayback Machine links) This takes place after the s2 finale, but Trey did not survive the gunshot. Ryan is being Ryan which is to say: very bad at talking about his feelings. And who better to drag him out of it than Seth, the boy who has always refused to let Ryan isolate when he's in pain? This one is very sweet and emotional, complete with some heartfelt gay awakenings, the pitfalls of navigating a very complicated grief, a side of Luke being hilarious, and some sexy frottage too. :)

Towards the Limits of Maps by dontyouwaitup (formerly aflowerinrain) ~35k, rated E Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5, Part 6, Part 7 (these are all Wayback Machine links) This fic is so beautiful and evocative. This author really knew how to nail the characterization and Seth's POV as well. It's a road trip fic set in the future (post college). Ryan and Seth are somewhat estranged, and Ryan shows up at Seth's doorstep saying he's about to drive back to Newport Beach and he wants Seth to come with. The boys have many loaded moments as they learn how to talk to each other again, and what they've missed in each other's lives over the years. Ryan is engaged to Marissa at the start of this fic, but... I promise it's a happy ending! And it's a fantastic, well-crafted angsty journey to get there. :)

Telegraph Avenue by hackthis ~48k, rated M Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5, Part 6, Part 7, Part 8, Part 9, Coda This is an excellent college fic where Ryan and Seth attend the same university and decide to room together. It's got everything I love in a college fic: people getting drunk and going on adventures together, class stress, hanging out at coffee shops and shows, navigating the mess of figuring out who you are now that you're young and away from home for the first time. It's a Seth POV fic that's heavily about him realizing his queerness (some Seth/OMC in there that's very fun) and, of course, eventually realizing how much he wants to be with Ryan. This fic also has a ton of indie music references in it which I love for fics in general, but especially for an OC one!

Starvation by diva5256 ~2k, rated E, warnings for major character death here (Seth), alcoholism, and eating disorders This was written for a death fic challenge, and it is incredibly sad but so beautifully written. Heed the warnings, but if you're able to handle this level of angst, you should definitely read it.

Black Out by candle_beck (yes, that very same candle_beck of Spn fandom!) ~1.6k, rated T This is a fun unrequited (or is it? if you read, you'll see what I mean <3) Seth/Ryan fic where Seth is recalling the previous night in a hungover haze, trying to figure out if he kissed Ryan or not.

Fit by nifra_idril ~3k, rated T This is a sweet first kiss fic taking place right after Ryan gets out of juvie in season 1. I felt like this list needed at least one short and sweet heart-warming fic, you know? :)

Always Take the Weather With You by amerella (Wayback Machine link) ~8.6k, rated M, sort-of warning for cheating? but in a very low stakes way, Seth is in college and there is some casual, brief Anna and Summer stuff This is another college era fic for them with a mega pining Seth who is losing touch with Ryan the longer they're both away at school, and the Seth POV is just... that jaunty, clever, neurotic, whirring-a-mile-a-minute thing that is just so very him.

Just This Once by kho ~1.4k, rated E This is a super hot first time fic that takes place right after Summer has left for Brown.

Three Times Seth & Ryan Nearly Got Caught, and the One Time They Did by somarific  ~2.7k, rated E Like a five times fic format but three hehe. This exploits the hilarious potential of Seth and Ryan living together and trying to secretly hookup right under Sandy and Kirsten's watchful eyes (which is a classic setup for these two, always love that). Funny, sexy, and sweet.

Popsicle Day by serialkarma ~2k, rated E Ryan and Seth cool down (heat up) with some popsicles on a hot summer day. ;) A delicious pwp.

Some Days Those Maps Collide by lowercasek (Wayback Machine link) ~5k, rated T This is one of the two fics that's on someone's own site. It's an established relationship fic where Ryan runs into Marissa and her boyfriend, and Seth and Ryan are navigating the challenges of adult queer life, where coming out isn't so much a one and done process, but a continual thing we do throughout all our lives. With a side of jealousy (nothing too angsty, just the natural pettiness that can arrive with seeing your boyfriend's old ex), reflections on the past and how far they've come, and what it's like to build a future together in adulthood, it's a nice slice-of-life snapshot of these two.

Kissing Seth Cohen by zahra ~2.4k, rated T Another one from offsite. A first kiss oneshot that takes place in season one. Just steamy, emotional goodness!
