Amazon’s Elusive ‘Echo’ Intelligent Home Speaker Falls Short In First Major Review
Though, Amazon launched its much anticipated Speaker Amazon echo which had built up a lot of hype, but it has fallen short of what it was thought of it to be.
Amazon’s Echo Speaker has numerous features which makes it a complete home device and has a great potential but lack of inbuilt battery, muffled up sound at larger volume levels and lack of iOS app has decreased the customer base of the company.
Though Amazon Echo Help has announced that after some firmware updates and settings tweak tips Echo will work just fine, along with a promise of iOS app launch, things don’t look good as amazon is planning on launching Echo 2.0 very soon thus jeopardising the present echo device.
However, Amazon Echo Setup is as swift and easy as it is promised along with android and amazon app compatibility, Low price of $199 for all users and $99 for amazon prime users along with the addition of its voice assistant Alexa.
Setting up Alexa is quite easy, but if you find any problem, then you can log on to Amazon.com Alexa Setup guide page under support tab. However, it is integrated with Bing which is not as much preferred as Google.
The efficient Support for Amazon Echo also gives us a facility for their technician to come to our place and set up Alexa and integrating with our devices and phone along with customised voice recognition.
Rarely will we need a technician too, as Amazon Echo tech support over a phone call itself is sufficient to guide us through to set up all necessary services if we need them.
Some older versions of Android devices running on gingerbread also need extra drivers to integrate with echo which are easily available on Amazon.com Echo setup tab.
If we wish to categorize Echo as a device, we will put it in a category of a Bluetooth speaker with a bit of added functionality and that’s it. It’s not to be considered a smart device right now as it is not.
Not having an inbuilt battery is a major deal breaker. It has to be powered by a power source and a device so beautiful and made to work wirelessly, but having to connect via cords is a major turnoff.
Further, as we use apps like Pandora and Spotify for streaming music, our subscription to these apps won’t be utilized here as it natively doesn’t support those apps.
Speaker quality itself is not robust and high end, in fact, it muffles up, distorts and sound breaks at higher levels of volume and for one thing for which we are buying it: Speakers, they themselves are not optimum.
Though Amazon has added a lot of usability to classify it as a smart device, the bottom line is… it’s not. Though we can do a lot of stuff like setting up alarms, reminders, asking it to add our daily commute on our phone, ordering a pizza and much more will come with future upgrades But its low mobility, Speaker muffling, integration with Bing due to which many times when Alexa can’t answer it sends Bing results on phone and being just a prototype as Echo 2.0 launch is around the corner which will have bumped up specs and functionality, it is not a device we will ask you to buy. Also, Amazon Echo Technical Support representatives are not updated with our queries. Procrastination is advised on this front.
