Sunset Sewer

In order to make my sewer photo sewer to look more creative, I took a couple steps back so I could get the sewer along with the trees and sky in the background. I learned from this assignment how to apply a more creative view to an everyday “boring” object. As well as developing photos digitally through Adobe Lightroom Classic.

I made this ordinary sewer into something intriguing, creative, and unique. The sewer now looks like something very special because of the interesting placement of leaves, which leaves the viewer wondering if they were put there like that or fell like that. The black and white effect of the photo creates a more serious tone, which is unique considering the photo is of a sewer.

When Ms. Lynn told my class that we would be taking photos of sewers and shovels I thought it was quite odd. Usually, when I think of photography, I think of taking pictures of aesthetically pleasing things, not smelly sewers. She told the class we needed to take creative photos of these thing, which I found to be extremely hard to make a picture of a sewer or plain old shovel interesting.

For this assignment we were supposed to make an ordinary shovel look extraordinary. The goal is to make an everyday object look interesting and exciting. I wasn’t surprised when I got this assignment because it is winter and there was a lot of snow. I thought this was a fun assignment but I didn’t like being out in the cold to take the pictures! To make this extraordinary I made it blend in with the trees and I used a creative angle.

With the sewer and shovel assignment I was told that I needed to express my creativity to make the photos more interesting. To make my pictures of a sewer more creative I poured water around the sewer. This created reflections of light that made my photo more creative. I also tried many different angles to make the photo more interesting. In the photo above I took the picture very low to the ground which made the sewer the obvious subject of the picture. With this angle I was also able to capture the sewer from a side view to make my picture stand out. I also got a lot of empty background such as the street and grass to give they picture a peaceful look and to eliminate any distractions from the sewer.

For this photo assignment, we were supposed to photograph a sewer and make it look extraordinary. Our teacher wants us to find the beauty in regular, overlooked objects. I thought taking a photo of a sewer was strange because they are dirty and boring, but after a while I found this assignment fun and new. In this photo I made the sewer extraordinary by adding bubbles. You can see how there are bubbles on the sewer and in the open spaces.

This ordinary shovel was found in my shed. It was boring and used simply to do yard work. There seemed to be nothing special about it, but this photo shows the detail and texture of the shovel. It shows the contrast between the snow texture and the shovel texture, the shovel looking more rough and the snow looking softer.

My first assignment of the class was to take 25 photos of a shovel and 25 photos of a sewer or drain. When I first heard about this assignment I was confused because I never had paid attention to these things let alone thought of taking pictures of them. I thought that my pictures would turn out boring because the two subjects I was given were not interesting to me. When I first started taking pictures I thought they were dull and lifeless but I quickly learned that with creativity, any photo can be interesting. Since this assignment I am more aware and see things in a different way, even snow shovels and sewers.
