selvedge/selvage - self-finished" edge of a piece of fabric which keeps it from unraveling and fraying

warp grain - lengthwise grain; strongest grain type (doesn't stretch)

weft grain - crosswise grain; middle strength (some stretching)

bias - diagonal grain; true bias = 45 degrees; weakest (stretches the most)

my notes on creating with a disability, sewing edition:

Problem: Cutting out is hugely overstimulating.

Solutions: Cut on good brainfog days; try not to get a garment out of scraps or awkward lengths; use patterns printed on thicker or more substantial paper, not tissue or swedish tracing paper. On cutting days, cutting is the only task. Handle it early, and then do low sensory tasks

rotary cutter: cut a straight line and strips of fabric

self-healing matt: to cut fabric on

a quilter's ruler: keep a rotary cutter cutting in a straight line

detail scissors: to cut tiny details and to snip at threads

fabric scissors: important to have one specifically for sewing project.

pinking shears: cutting a zig zag pattern along a fabric edge to limit the length of frayed threads, prevent unraveling, and keep projects crisp and clean

sewing pins and cushion

hand sewing needles: hand sewing projects, hand sewing a button, snap, or a hem

needle threader: quickly prepare needle for hand stitching, good for embroidery projects

thimble: hand sewing projects, usually worn on the middle finger of dominant hand, helps in pushing the needle through fabric

point turner

bodkins: help turn a fabric tube inside and pull elastic cord through a casing. could also use a safety pin

seam ripper: removes unwanted stitches and opens a buttonhole

measuring tape: a foldable one and a flexible or retractable measuring tape

fray check: stopes moving threads when applied to fabric

basting tape: will temporarily hold two layers of fabric together without pinning. for hemming light fabrics like silk or satin

iron + ironing board or easy press + pressing matt: pressing is essential

sewing machine: know the types of needles you're sewing with for the fabric
