“The imagery in the drawings from “The Sexual Life of Savages” address cultural anxieties using stereotypical imagery of savagery, violence, exotic rituals, rampant sexuality, miscegenation,and cannibalism. They draw from historical sources ranging from John White and Jacques LeMoyne’s paintings of the New World (and Theodore de Bry’s engravings of them), Casta paintings, and popular advertisements from the 19th century, such as the Pears’ soap ads, that used a visual language of “savagery” in imperialistic and racist ways.”
