Louis stopped but didn’t turn all the way around. Harry was still kneeling in the sand, hair wild, mouth pink and swollen, hoodie twisted askew from Louis’ hands. He looked wrecked. Louis’ heart bucked hard enough to bruise. “I didn’t get your number,” Harry said. Then, quieter, more dangerous for the way it stripped him clean: “What if I want to see you again?” Louis looked at him and saw all over again how this would go if he let it. The wanting. The tenderness. The way Harry would hand him pieces of himself and trust him not to drop them. Louis had dropped far less precious things. So he reached for cruelty dressed as cleverness, because it was what he had. “You said you believe in fate,” he called back. “If you’re right, you’ll see me again.” Harry stared at him for one beat. Then smiled. Those dimples punched Louis square in the spine.

Spoilers for SFALD Chapter 22 below:

He didn’t want to hit another kid trapped in that place. He didn’t want Billy’s blood on his knuckles. He didn’t want to become useful to the people, hurting them. But then they saw him getting close to Zayn. Zayn, who Louis had noticed the moment he arrived. He’d been in the corner with his knees to his chest, crying so hard his whole body seemed embarrassed by it. He couldn’t stop for days. Not dramatically. Not loudly. Just this constant, leaking grief, like someone had cracked him and forgotten to come back with glue. Louis was scared, too. Of course he was. He was a child. His mother left him there. God had apparently cosigned the paperwork. Every room smelled like punishment. Every adult smiled too calmly. But someone else was having a harder time. So Louis went to him. Sat beside him first. Then brought him water. Then stole him extra bread. Then told him which staff member to avoid and which one only pretended to be kind. He took Zayn under his wing because somebody had to, and because the second Zayn looked at him through all that crying, Louis felt something inside him click into place. A mission. That was the thing Louis needed. Pain was easier when it had a job. Fear got quieter when there was someone smaller to stand in front of. Caring for Zayn gave Louis somewhere to put himself besides inside his own terror. So when they threatened Zayn, Louis listened.

Zayn is his emotional support human: beautiful, untouchable, violently loyal, and chronically unable to mind his own business.

Liam is rich, grounded, completely gone for Zayn, and trying very hard to earn Louis’ blessing without getting eaten alive.

And then there’s Harry.

Harry enters with a scream, slips handwritten poems under Louis’ door, believes in astrology and Shakespeare, and somehow manages to be earnest, sweet, and devastatingly sexy without trying. He is hopelessly gone for Louis. Unfortunately, Louis is busy being tangled in a dangerous arrangement with a closeted politician, emotionally welded to Zayn, and hiding behind walls so high they have their own weather.

Harry keeps tossing heart-shaped grenades over them anyway.

Set in Los Angeles, this is an ensemble romance about found family, bad coping mechanisms, queer chaos, rich-boy devotion, political rot, sex, drugs, handwritten poetry, and the kind of comedy that bites back.

Oh, and everyone goes on a bender in Chapter 10.
