75 years ago today an accident in Switzerland gave birth to a history-rupturing discovery, what chemist Albert Hofmann called "my problem child," lysergic acid diethylamide or LSD. Amidst the celebrations I think it is worth remembering that Albert took his problem child every 3 days for most of his life, but in a very tiny dosage, 30 micrograms or so, what he used to sharpen his intelligence, not blow his mind and render him incapable of human interaction. The "microdose" is coming back these days, and good, because in our Quick Fix and Silver Bullet culture I think it is all too easy for us, and especially when we are young, to think that more is better. It isn't. And while there is great value in the ego-shattering experience of hardcore psychonauts, I promise you those people gradually worked up to it, learned the ropes, learned themselves before they lost themselves in transcendental hyperspace.
