Malcolm X Plaza

On This day San Francisco State students (GUPS, Students for Gaza, Faculty for Justice in Palestine) held a rally in Malcolm X Plaza, that convened at 12:15pm, to announce the beginning of their encampment for Palestine.

San Francisco State students were one of many student groups across the nation who encamped last spring to demand divestment from arms/weapons manufactures like Lockheed Martin who are facilitating the genocide of the Palestinian people.

San Francisco State students became the first in the country to host an open bargaining session with their university President and eventually gain divestment as a result of their encampment.

SF State has BEEN in the middle of a very rich and radical history. The students of this decade have defined their presence on this campus as one paying respect to and leading forward this radical history through the work for liberation.

And I love these students. I love this work. Forever and always until and beyond liberation I will love you !!!

Our Initiative, Our Findings

In a 2022 contract with a company (Krueger International, INC.) that sells furniture made in prisons, San Francisco State University agreed to pay over $125,000 according to publicly available reports published by the CSU Office of the Chancellor (#2202100631): the equivalent of roughly 18 SF State students’ tuition. The items bought through this contract furnish our classes, administrative buildings, and dorms. While our institution loves using our Black and Brown students’ faces on its promotional material, the choice to enter into a contract that supports forced labor and the prison industrial complex shows a disconnect between the ethics of our administration and the ethics of the students they serve. An article published by NPR in August 2022 reports that prisoners earn 13-52 cents per hour. From personal experience, our founder’s step-dad, David, tells us that everyday items such as travel-size toothpaste tubes ($7), Top Ramen ($2), and a bag of chips ($10) can take weeks or months of saving to afford. The ACLU furthers in a post published in June 2022 that 76% of prisoners are forced to engage in this work or face additional punishment.

The Coalition of Equity and Justice seeks to end the contract San Francisco State University has with Krueger International, INC.

We vehemently opposes slavery in all of its form, as should the school many of us chose for its diversity and allegiance to communities of color inordinately effected by the prison industrial complex.
