* ◟ 𝐇𝐎𝐖 𝐇𝐀𝐕𝐄 𝐒𝐀𝐑𝐀𝐈'𝐒 twenties manage to catapult her into what seems to be a destined lifetime of structure and responsibility ? pigs would fly before she ever knew . fly - right , flying thousands of miles away from thailand had been sarai’s reenactment of the thousand teenage movies she’s seen , trying to flee her family and their self - serving agenda . except . . . not really . she still has tuiton paid under them , clothes bought by them , and has her parent’s to owe for her easy lifestyle . so , as much as she doesn’t want to admit it . . . she owes them . one of those obligations includes marriage , and though sarai is only twenty one , her parents have been searching for her potential soulmate for a decade .
it was fun , at first , sarai spending her childhood and teenage years thinking of how she was destined to be paired with her soulmates , all by the help of her loving parents . but now that she’s older , rather than touched by the sentiment , sarai’s found herself utterly disgusted with the idea of her parents having any sense of control over her life , let alone her future partner . but after a drawn - out call with her parents , their intentions are clear - marry the man of their choice , and certify a life of security , wealth , and happiness - for them , that is .
vesper , vesper , vesper . . . in their words , his family have been a huge asset to ours for years . bullshit . was that supposed to comfort her ? if his family was anything like her own , she didn’t want to have anything to do with him . but one thing was for sure , she wasn’t going to wait around for her parents to organize a phony dinner date - she needed to know who he was now . the problem ? it’s nearing twelve am , and she couldn’t match a face to the name . luckily , it didn’t take more than a few minutes of asking - i need to interview him for an article, she claims - until someone was able to give her the information she needs .
a party ? he’s at a party , on a wednesday night . . . great start . sarai doesn’t mind having fun , but it’s out of her character to be out when there’s class the next day . which is why it’s so bizarre that as the clock strikes twelve , her boots click against the house floor as she navigates between dancing bodies . she asks person after person , questioning the mystery male’s whereabouts , until someone finally directs her to a back room . how ... promising .
whether it’s the rage at her predicament , or an impending sense of irritability , sarai has no impulse to knock as she flings the door open hurriedly . holy fuck . her ... “ fiance ” , latched onto some other student she’s never seen before , back to her . has he not gotten the news ? or was she just supposed to be the other woman ? keep it cool , sarai , your reputation’s on the line . so , walking forward , she pulls his shoulder back , turning him in her direction , scowling . so much for keeping it cool . “ are you vesp - ” oh wait . shit . she knows that face . freshman year , she thinks . but where from . . . ? she’s trying to pinpoint exactly how , yet draws blanks every time . but oh my god , she knows that face .
