the live music blurs into the background as you near the bonfire itself, distance muffling the sound and allowing your ears to be filled with cheerful shrieks as two figures stand ankle deep in the sea, splashing the salty water at eachother, and so delighted in doing so that it doesn’t bother you when they get too eager, splashing you in the process. you taste salt on your lip, and later notice it in the beer in your hand, your shirt a little damp, too. you smile, shrugging it off and allowing the brief tense moment to end, as the pair looked at you, faces fallen, and worried you’d react badly. their smiles return at your reaction, and they get back to their antics. you wander on. laughter, chatter, and the clinking of glass bottles replace all other noises, the gathering of people more dense but not uncomfortably crowded. the size of the bonfire allows you to feel it before you’re able to get too close, and you’re already being offered marshmallows and a fresh beer by a smiling stranger before you know what to with yourself. however, you soon find your place as an unfamiliar face invites you over to join them. the night is warm. you feel at home.
live music, a barbecue, booze readily available, and laughter drowning out the sound of the crackling bonfire itself, saturday is sure to be a night to remember. almost everyone in seagrove has gone out of their way to free their schedule and make their way down to the town’s famous beach, for seagrove’s first ( and if successful, annual ) bonfire ! even those who never intended to attend may find themselves wandering towards the buzz of loud music and the cheerful people enjoying it, and simply won’t be able to help themselves from joining the fun.
whether they’re here for the friends, the food, or the music, there’s a little something for everyone. advertised months in advance, the hype has been building around saturday’s date, and it surely won’t disappoint — and if the residents of seagrove don’t wake up the next morning with a slight headache, sand in their shoes, and the smell of the bonfire clinging to their clothes, they’ve been doing it wrong ! local businesses have come together in support, whether it’s putting a flyer in their window, or providing the vegan-friendly marshallows ( thank you, the grape vine ! ) as who can say no to the chance to bring people together ?
