Ah, there it is.
In 204 we finally get a real sense of what a sadistic villain Aldertree is. Fittingly enough, his first act of true villainy happens at the expense of a Downworlder.
But Raphael’s torture has other consequences the writers seem to ignore. Seeing it makes Simon the unquestionable bad guy in the Raphael vs Simon issue: while Simon’s issues revolve around a temporary estrangement with his mother - which we now know could be easily avoided with a believable story to put Elaine’s worries to rest -, people are dying and Raphael is getting mutilated. Simon comes off as a spoiled brat in this situation (even more so when he calls Raphael “scarface”).
Unrelated, the episode had such good potential. Alec and Clary going on mission together seemed to be leading to some bonding time. But then Alec gets possessed and his body is used to kill Clary’s mother. This is the laziest, most empty shock-value decision on the show. By all means, kill Jocelyn to prove the show is different than the books. She served her purpose. But don’t do it to shoehorn a friendship between Alec and Clary when the biggest development it will get is a poorly written suicide attempt and a minute-long conversation afterward.
One last thing: how does Aldertree know all of that about Jace? Unless Jace is out there telling the falcon story or that “to love is to destroy” to everyone, this is not the kind of thing that goes into one’s mission reports.
