25 Additional Days of Comics! 9/25: Sh*tshow #1 (2020)

Here’s a not very fun fun fact.

The title is censored on the cover but its just Shitshow in the legal information on the inside of the title.

I’ve never heard of this comic or company before but hey, that’s what mystery boxes are about. Even if I’m the one mysterying.

Apparently, this comic is post-apocalyptic.

Once, not too long ago, the world was innocent and straightforward like uhhh lets say a Silver Age comic book world. Then came a Bad Thing that killed most of the heroes and caused most of the rest to lose their powers.

The Bad Thing was the arrival of Balam, King of the Underworld. And the Not-Justice League Legend’s Legion was mostly used to dealing with your mad scientists, jewel thieves, aliens, super crooks and so forth. So it didn’t go well.

They all died except for Legend - a Not-Superman with a dying star lodged in his heart giving him all the powers - and voodoo sorceress Macabre Mel.

There’s also some narration about the age of heroes had made things too stagnant so it was just cruising for something to come along and shake things up. Nature abhors a quo.

Sure.

It’s not clear as of issue 1 of this Sh*tshow how Balam, King of the Underworld, was stopped. But for whatever reason, with the world shaken up and superpowered people rare, Legend decides to join a circus? With his superpowered children who are possibly adopted, the Magnificent McCoys? Also Macabre Mel is there? Reading fortunes?

It feels like there’s better uses for superpowers in the post-apocalypse. Why do circuses persist as a cultural touchstone way beyond their actual relevance?

Legend’s kryptonite is either beer or he’s been getting himself pass out drunk on a superpower inhibiting potion. The point being, he’s a wreck and a mess and he chose a bad lifetime to be a messy wreck in because Balam comes back at the end of the issue.

From whatever happened to him the first time. Must be something that requires taking revenge because the next time tease says “Balam’s Revenge.”

Interesting enough premise. Thing that ended the world, more or less, comes back for round two and the surviving heroes are in poor shape to stop it. The circus context doesn’t grab me though.
