Alec let's this kiss happen cause he thinks it's the last time. He knows he should just walk away but he needs a this. This is the last time he will ever kiss the love of his life's lips. The last moment they will share and he can't pull away until he does
“I need a break.”
“That's a wonderful idea. Well, where do you wanna go? Hawaii? Jamaica? I've never been on a plane before, but let's avoid coach-”
“No, Magnus. I need a break from us.”
I know this is a really shallow thing to observe after all this hurt and pain from the new episode - but can we talk about how beautiful (pretty/hot) Alec looked in 3x18? Magnus is always stunning even when he is feeling low, but Alec with the hair and the jacket, shooting 5(!) arrows at the same time *fans herself* and trying to maintain his composure over his heartbreak is a vision *objectifyingover*
“You've been through a trauma, a loss of identity. Believe me. I understand.”
“I feel so hopeless sometimes. And I don't want to burden him.”
I thought this parallel was really interesting.
Symbolising Alec walking out of Magnus' life and Asmodeus walking into it.
Also that Alec was the doorway for Asmodeus to get to Magnus.
I may be reading too much into it but I love the imagery.
“You said there's nothing I can do to make it better.”
“It's not your job to make it better.”

Alec spent all episodes of 3B reassuring Magnus: of his worth, of his love for him, of his place on his side - but Magnus couldn't hear him. He wanted to, he wanted it to be true, but he didn't feel it for himself - nobody (even unending love and support) can make you feel whole but yourself.
So how should Alec who is no stranger to depression and self-worth problems understand what he means to Magnus if he is never explictly told? Even if Magnus really tried to explain that this love is special again and again he would need time to really feel it, but they never got around to this more complex aspect of Magnus' love, because of everything going on and just no time to find some peace to explore their love instead of always fighting for it.
“I don't know what I'd do without your son.”
“We are all here for you, Magnus. You're part of the family.”
