Hi! I grew up thinking I was horrible at art and I'm only just now giving myself a second chance. How do I stay motivated and stop being such a perfectionist?
I've struggled with a similar thing of perfectionism and too this day I still try to let myself not make perfect full pieces only but its hard.
My tips are this:
1) Try new angles, perspectives, things you don't often draw, but you think are cool just for the heck of it. It might not look good, but when you have a concept you wanna do you might shape it to your style and make something new!
2) Give yourself something else to consume as you draw. I mean media like podcasts or shows you play in the background.
I listen to a lot of podcasts and I often find myself in a position where I say, "I don't have any drawing ideas, but I gotta catch up on my new podcast episode." So I just doodle instead and it helps me make random things for later ideas.
3) Fill every space of your sketchbook, front to back. Remember doodling lil stars and stuff on your homework like you used to? You can in your sketchbook! What you make is a quality all your own, you should be allowed to have fun and make small, imperfect things!
4) Realize that not every day is a perfect drawing day and allow yourself a break. I still struggle with this one, but sometimes your hand doesn't wanna do what you have in your head.
You don't need to draw every day, nor does each day you choose to draw have to be perfect. Practicing art is messy, but it gets better with time and not beating yourself up over the little things.
I hope this helps even just a little bit. Keep working on your art, even if you don't think it will come out exact or "perfect" :)
