I don’t know, I still don’t think the Disgaea fandom was that bad. So many people say that it got bad, but… I only ever saw it get as bad as the average fandom at its worst. I guess I just don’t understand?

it's cool if you don't; you were definitely never part of the problem, and in fact you're one of the members I respect the most. you seem to have this distance from the fandom that I rather envy; to an extent, I think it chews you up the worst if you really care about it way too much and get obsessive like I did, which is probably why I have one of the worst views of it

if you want an explanation for why my attitude, personally, is like that, I've been meaning to put it all into words for a while now. only a few people still follow me that could be offended by it, so it's whatever

the worst thing about the fandom, to me, was that a good chunk of people in it can't take anything at all and those same people in it feel compelled to press their opinions on others. three posts of porn in the tag? multiple people will tag their posts of whining about how terrible that is instead of just ignoring or savioring the blogs. one clash between people? thirty vagueblog posts and people crying about why can't the fandom just be nice, why are people so mean? one single post of dumb and pointless character hate in the tag? a dramatic and pleading post about not tagging your hate that gets dozens of notes. the bottom line is that there's a sort of neurosis in the fandom, a too-touchy alarm bells system that turns small issues into enormous fandom disturbances that stress everyone the hell out

the other main problem that I started to notice more towards the end of my run was this overwhelming negativity. most of that camp doesn't overlap with the alarm bells camp, and, in fact, a lot of the negativity camp is a direct backlash against those people; it's an entirely separate group that just hates everything -- especially the fandom and specific members -- and broadcasts it regularly. I don't want that, either -- mostly because, to my shame, I was in that edgy-and-cool hate-it-all group at one point. it's a really corrosive and contagious sort of attitude, and it really doesn't improve the fandom environment for anyone

putting these two together, the reason I finally jumped fandom and jumped it hard was the redlining incident. jesus christ, the redlining incident. the people railing against it overreacted to the ceiling and took their personal opinion of what is and isn't acceptable art critique and tried to shove it down everyone's throat as fact, which sucks; and then some of the people redlining started doing it specifically to attract ire and upset people, which also sucks. in the end, the firestorm generated because of it upset everyone, and the entire debacle stood as a reminder that the disgaea fandom can't ever leave well enough alone. it sucked. the end. ranka was out. ranka was gone. ranka was off to new places

more than anything, I have a very strong ire for my own behavior in the fandom. most of it was my fault, but part of it was also because I shut myself up in the fandom and let its problems and problematic people both poison me and and agitate me. and that's probably why I'm so ornery about it. because, in the end, a lot of it reflected back on me
