I’m still doing a bit of work with this but I’ve been really excited to be painting my boy again after so long, so I had to share something of him. I miss my son

Sort of. Decided to just leave it with flats for now since I made this to be like a reference for shadow!Melvin and shading it could make it harder for artists I might commission to make out certain details etc. Flats seem more crisp and easier to read. I belatedly realised that the pose I went with obscures both of his hands, so you can’t see how long his fingernails are which is meant to be a pretty big part of his design, oops lol.

For once I actually did something I said I was going to... Ended up turning this into a speedpainting exercise, so it’s not as detailed as it could be. Here’s a sleepy shadow!Melvin who just woke up, giving Bakura The Look™ because it’s way too early for whatever shit he’s pulling.

Well now I'm just sitting here apologizing to Melvin for forgetting his abs. Art is a mistake.

As I thought I would, I ended up not liking this xP It’s been an age since I painted anything and I’m crazy out of practice, not to mention it looks way too much like several paintings I’ve already done in the past. But regardless, here’s the thing I was painting.

I saw an image of a character that was done using a palette of only pinks and magentas, and it made me want to try something similar. So I used my favourite son shadow!Melvin as my muse and painted him in shades of purple, save for the blue I used for his eyes. Speaking of which, his eyes ended up looking a little crooked, but that’s because in the sketch he was meant to have one sort of squinted but the colour made it too dark to really see the difference in their shape, haha.

Here’s the thing if anyone else wants to see it as well, haha. The tones are nice I think, it’s a lot wider a range than I would have chosen if I just painted it myself so it actually looks a bit nicer than my usual paintings, lol. The greens and blues are there, which is something I can never do properly oops.

Sometimes I like to edit my own art after it’s finished, to play around with ideas that could have been rather than what they ended up being. 

As you can see here, angsty shower Melvin very nearly ended up being angry shadow!Melvin in the rain, facing off with whichever unlucky soul was stupid enough to make him bleed.
