“I miss her too. But... I just want us to survive this.”
I can't have been the only one to have expected this to happen when Part of Madeline knelt down next to her in this scene. It would have been the perfect mirror image of last time.

one really interesting little thing in celeste chapter 9 is: the time when badeline gets angry and madeline, and immediately catches herself and calms herself down? madeline was yelling and angry and harsh first, and badeline seemed to be echoing her feelings. it's not the only time either. they're not fully separate people; badeline is feeling a lot of what madeline is feeling, and handling it much better with all madeline has taught her!
Yes! Madeline and Shadow Madeline are very much the same person, albeit different parts of her, which is one of the things I find so fun about the concept of Shadows. They’re both feeling the same grief and pain over losing Granny because they’re both Madeline; they just represent different ways that Madeline is dealing with it, either consciously or subconsciously.
Another part that I think really illustrates how Shadow Madeline is the same person as Madeline despite often acting very different on the surface is chapter 3. You can just tell as Madeline makes her way through the hotel that she’s secretly thinking this place is a dump and getting increasingly frustrated at Mr. Oshiro’s lack of gratitude for her help and obvious desperate attempts to get her to stay, even if she isn’t actually mentioning any of it to him because she’s trying to be nice. Then when Shadow Madeline shows up near the end, she immediately spouts all of those unkind things that Madeline was definitely thinking the whole time, because her Shadow is all of those suppressed inner thoughts that Madeline hides from the surface.
Some brief expression drawing practice featuring the new expressions that Madeline and Part of Her have in chapter 9.
Curious as to what reasons they have to be making these expressions that they didn’t have before? You should definitely play watch chapter 9.
the corner of the fandom i'm in has decided that if given the chance PoM would mess with madeline but like. in ways madeline secretly found amusing. which is adorable and hilarious.
Awww, she totally would, though! Like that one bit in the credits where they get back to the phone box from the dream, and Part of Madeline clones herself and floats in circles around Madeline then laughs, kind of like a "hey, remember that time I chased you down and tried to stop you? Good times! (sorry about that by the way)". Also this one art I've seen of Part of Madeline using her cloning powers to nab some strawberry pie, because of course she would.
And the best part is, Part of Madeline would know that Madeline secretly finds this kind of thing amusing, because she is Madeline! So there'd be no awkward "you think you're being fun but actually you're just being a dick, please stop" going on. Having fun with your Shadow whom you're on good terms with is a completely wholesome way to have fun! It's a shame that apparently the Mountain usually doesn't separate people's Shadows from them unless they at least start out incredibly at odds with each other like Madeline and hers did. Theo had some issues, but not quite enough that his Shadow showed up.
(...Not that I'm letting this stop me from still headcanoning that the bird is Granny's Shadow. Chapter 9 never actually debunked that. The idea that Granny lived with her Shadow that liked being a bird for some reason is way cuter than just that she lived with some random bird as a pet.)
Its the ficwriting corner of the celeste fandom, there are like 3 of us and i just made one of the others post the woman with calculus meme over the fact that celeste mountain is on an island
…wait, it is on an island, but it’s also in Canada. Does Canada have islands that are just a mountain and nothing else? And even if it does, how did Madeline drive there? Huhhhh.
(Hello, multiple asks in fairly short succession! I’m pretty sure now that this is all the same anon, heh. Gonna put them all in the same post to avoid clogging things up.)
honestly my headcanon on shadow madeline being called badeline is that shes just, super goth because that was part of what madeline was repressing, and genuinely believes the name "badeline" sounds edgy and cool enough that she wants to use it sometimes. madeline is just like, sure, okay, you have a name some days but only some days and it is "badeline", that is possibly the least weird part about this situation.
But the thing is, the name “Badeline” is never used in the canon story. She is only ever referred to as “Part of Me/You”, so her in-story name is “Part of Madeline”. A headcanon on why she’s called “Badeline” isn’t necessary, because she’s not! Part of Madeline does not seem to call herself that and never gets called that by Madeline and probably has never even considered that it could be a name for her.The only level on which the existence of the name “Badeline” needs to be justified is an out-universe level, explaining why the fans adopted that name and why the creators sometimes use it.
Whether it’s relevant to her Shadow’s name or not, the notion that Madeline has a repressed goth side is a lot more up to interpretation, but I don’t quite think that can be a thing, either. Remember that when Madeline asks her why she looks so creepy, Part of Madeline is uncomfortable and tries to brush it off as unimportant. If she embodied Madeline’s repressed goth-ness and her appearance reflected how Madeline secretly sometimes kind of wants to look, her response would probably have been something more like, “Yeah, this is how I look, isn’t it awesome? Way cooler than how you look, at any rate.”
"I don't... look creepy any more?" "I guess not. Maybe it's because I stopped thinking of you that way."
According to the dialogue in chapter 8, when Madeline revisits Celeste Mountain a year later, it's no longer able to separate that Part of Her from herself. Which makes sense, but it's a shame - I'd have loved to see a conversation between the two Madelines now that they've been getting along for a year!
On the other hand, what if Madeline could still talk to that Part of Her if she was in front of one of the mirrors that she broke out of in the first place? And hey, didn't Mr. Oshiro have one such mirror in his presidential suite? And don't you think Madeline might decide to stay in his hotel as a favour to him on her second visit - and wouldn't he repay the favour by offering her the presidential suite to stay in?
So there you go, now we can imagine that they totally did get to talk to each other again! You're welcome.
Celeste: When Even Your Issues Have Issues
As I've already mentioned, Celeste is a game with an amazing story. There's a lot of reviews out there that talk about the story's merits, but they understandably do so in a fairly vague way, since they don't want to spoil exactly how the story goes. But this leaves a lot unsaid about the precise reasons why I think the writing is so good - like, it astounds me that the game's creator has apparently never written anything before and "learned to write while making this game" - and this can't really be talked about without getting into specifics. So most of this is going to contain spoilers. If you haven't played Celeste yet (and, as I cannot emphasise enough, you should), I don't recommend going past the cut.
